Beat me to it. I would add
    -Corny dialogue
    -Utterly nonsensical plots
    -Contradicting backstories

(of course, ALL of the above are present, and indeed expected, in TF shows of Japanese origin)

Oh yeah, they're also missing "Decepticons! Retreat!"

also, the newer shows are lacking the atmosphere of a schoolyard disagreement that the G1 show tried to pass off as war.

I am sorry but I cannot let such an unfounded claim go unnoticed or untouched. How can you so easily ignore or dismiss the actual facts of the matter when it comes to the G1 Voice Acting. Have you even looked at these peoples resumes??

Frank Welker: Annie Award Nominee, His broad spectrum of character voices, noises, and other vocal effects that have appeared over the last 40 years in motion pictures, have vaulted him to number one on the "All Time Top 100 Stars at the Box office" list. The revenue of films he has participated in have generated close to five billion dollars. His work in over 90 films has put him ahead of Eddie Murphy, Harrison Ford, Tom Hanks and Samuel L. Jackson.

One of the most prolific voice actors of all time, he has been involved with some of the most popular and important animated programs of all time as well, beginning with his role as level headed leader Fred Jones in Scooby-Doo, the evil Decepticon leader Megatron in Transformers (among others), Dr. Ray Stantz in The Real Ghostbusters, and a variety of supporting roles in GI Joe, Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, and The Smurfs.

Peter Cullen: I shouldn't need to defend this one lol

Chris Latta: Seriously! Starscream and Cobra Commander...NUFF said

Corey Burton: Annie Award Nominee & Recipient

Casey Kasem: DVDX Award Nominee, um American Top 40!, Radio Hall Of Fame, SHAGGY, Hollywood Walk of Fame and Lifetime Achievement Award

Michael Bell: Duke from GI Joe come on "Yo Joe" was one of the most famous lines from the cartoons of the 80s period!

Don Messick: Annie Award Recipient, and I think writing the rest of his pages of accolades should be unnessecary at this point we should all be able to concede that he was a voice acting 'god'

Scatman Crothers: Saturn Award Nominee & Recipient, Star on Walk of Fame

    Gregg Berger: Annie Award Nominee

Alan Oppenheimer: Emmy Nominee, One of the finest animated voice artists in the business, Oppenhemer has provided many famous cartoon voices including Mighty Mouse, Skeletor, and Ming the Merciless, among hundreds of others over a four-decade career

    Richard Gautier: Tony Award Nominee

Clive Revill: Golden Globe Award Nominee 2 time Tony Award Nominee

Rob Paulsen: 4 time Annie Award Nominee and 3 time winner, DVDX Award Nominee & Recipient, Emmy Nominee & Recipient

    Charles Adler: Annie Award Nominee

David Mendenhall: Over 15 Award Nominations or Wins

John Moschitta Jr.: World's Fastest Talker

Susan Blu: 4 time Emmy Nominee

I mean seriously do I need to keep going???

And what did it start out as? A "piss on non-G1 series" thread.
Threads like this NEVER end well. Not everyone thinks that the G1 cartoon was the best one we've had. So they say so. And then someone gives them shit for saying so. And so they retort. And so on, and so forth, ad nauseam.

I disagree but maybe I read the original post wrong. I took it as a completely innocent question where someone was saying that they felt like something was missing after G1 in other series (not that any were better or worse than others) just that something was missing and he was tryign to pinpoint what it was.

Dont see why that deems an automatic pissing match but maybe I am way off

Because the second someone comes in and points out what they perceive to be a shortcoming in the G1 cartoon, they usually get jumped on for it, or end up on the receiving end of numerous snide comments. And that's already started.

It's missing awesomeness. But it makes up for it with unbelievably crappy character design.

It's what results from so slavishly emulating the G1 cartoon.

What are the new TF cartoons lacking? Peter Cullen, obviously. But they make up for that with Gary Chalk/David Kaye.

Sure did. Wait, let me check...yup!

    G1 = awesome

TFA = unbelievably crappy character design

The new ones are missing awesomeness, but have tons of unbelievably crappy character design.

    How is that not clear?

Oh, I see...I should have used AND, not BUT. Here: The new ones are missing awesomeness, AND have tons of unbelievably crappy character design.

    That should clear everything up...

another thing new TF cartoons are missing that G1 had:

    Original characters.

in G1, everyone was new. now, we're pretty much stuck with those same characters being recycled over and over, and everyone is too afraid to break new ground with characters. we've only had two truly original casts in all of transformers (in the US, anyways). G1, and Beast Wars. hell, all these years later, and we're still seeing the same subgroups as G1 had. dinobots, constructicons, and even the aerialbots and combaticons have been brought back in energon.

the newer shows (and toylines) suffer because of this, in my opinion. they're sticking too close to what G1 did, and are afraid to try anything truly new, which is one of the biggest reasons G1 was so damn popular. EVERYTHING about it was new.

I must say I agree with most of that...although I was disappointed that the Live Action movie thought it necessary to bring in 'new' characters.

I know that may seem hypocritical but with the cartoon series one reason why Beast Wars was so great was because of the new characters however the pure invention of characters with no backstory/origin or character development that the bay movie did was IMHO its biggest fault...
