Collectors of all things mecha, I need your opinion on the must-buy mecha / chogokin current out there in the market. For example, would you recommend Toynami Masterpiece Voltron? Reasons. Some of the mecha that I have identified are:

    i) Bandai's Dancougar
    ii) Yamato's Valks
    iii) TakaraTomy's Scopedog

Your opinions would be greatly appreciated! :D

The Aquarion. Incredible figure and extremly complex. Three ships that combine into a unified robot form. You can rearrange the ships for 3 distince robot forms.

Fretburn - I've been considering of the Aquarion for awhile but I heard he has problems standing on its own. Is this true?

ams - very good choices...regarding CM's GGGG, does he have any major QC problems? I heard some collectors complainting of loose leg joints.

For the first run version, yes, it has great difficulty standing. Reportedly the Attack-Type recolour, as well as the ver 2.0 released simultaneously have redesigned hips that allow them to support themselves without the stand.

It was only really an issue with Solar Aquarion (red). Aquarion Luna and Aquarion Mars (green and blue, respectively) had less poseable legs, and thus could somewhat stand without support, but it was usually safer to use the stand anyways.

Hit or miss. Apparently, there was in illegitimate early run of the figure with lower QC that made it out onto the market, and those are probably the ones people are experiencing loose joints with. Others report tighter joints, but it's still a fiddly toy, relegating it more to a display piece than something you can just pick up and play with easily.

And in my recent experience, SoC Gunbuster jumps its way onto the must-have list easily. By most accounts of people who have both, Gunbuster easily trumps Dancouga on playability factor alone, and is a much more solid toy all around.

Be wary of Yamato Garland figure, I have it, and the arm broke off due to fragile plastic quality at the shoulder joint

I have the Attack_Type recolour. It can stand on it's own but it has a stand that greatly aids in it's posing. I've had mine for a few months but need to start liquidating a good chunck of my collection. I'm selling it if you/anyone is interested.

    the exkiser looks purdy sweet.

    big dans up there.

scopedog, i dont really like the design, looks a bit generic, but the execution of the figure is awsum in that it represents what anime robot is all abt: a robot driven by cool looking albeit androgynous male protagonist.

If you are only -ever- going to buy -one- Soul of Chogokin...

...get Leopardon. He hits every basic mark -perfectly-. Only SoC I've ever had that was outright fun without feeling like I need to be careful in the slightest. Great posability, the two sets of arms are swappable in seconds, the gimmicks are great, the transformation is clean and satisfying...

I gush. But I gush for good reasons.

While I've heard nothing but good things about Leopardon in terms of execution, he just looks too... 70's to me. It's that whole gaudy, chunky, nonsensical giant robot flare prevalent in designs of that era *shrug*. I guess I'm just too used to the sleek and sexy stying of more modern mecha, over the basic rough-and-tumble robots of old.

Do you have a picture? My Garland is perfectly fine. I know some people broke the bars, but that's because they didn't know what they were doing.

Comes with a large (8-inch, I think, same size as Leopardon at least) fixed-pose "Soul of Sofubi" (Soul of Soft Vinyl) Spiderman in his Leopardon-summoning pose. Also comes with a smaller plastic Spidey to scale with the larger Spider-Machine car. There's an even smaller Spider-Machine that's meant to dock with Leopardon, and Leopardon himself comes with sword, shield, and a set of super-poseable arms to replace the transforming set.

I definitely wouldn't put any of the CMs brave gokins on the list, they have terrible build quality and they're irritatingly fiddly.

    My list:

SOC Gunbuster - Huge, seriously impressive engineering, tons of accessories

Masterpiece Convoy - We all know why

SOC Dancouga - Big, beefy, and the epitome of gokin cool

Aquarion - An engineering marvel and probably a lot bigger and less fiddly than people think

Any of the Yamato 1/48 Valks - Like Prime/Convoy, everyone knows why

Koenig Monster - Seriously cool and the best rendition of an interesting design. It's big and although it has it's flaws, there's nothing else like it

All three Fewture Getters - They're big, tons of diecast, lots of articulation, amazing design, and they cost an absolute fucking fortune

Yamato 1/12 Scopedog - I don't like the design, but it's the best version of the Scopedog ever made

Max Factory GGGG - Brilliant version of the GGGG with tons of accessories and a good stand. It doesn't combine, but it does have a ton of articulation and top notch paint and build quality. The CMs GGGG looks and feels like a toy, the MF is a collectable.
