I've heard of (but have never played) Way of the Samurai, Way of the Samurai 2, Samurai Jack, Samurai Western, Shinobi, Nightshade, I-Ninja. Any other games I haven't mentioned yet?

To get things out of the way, I have the Onimusha and Genji games, and find them to be a bit repetitive and boring. I also have all the special deluxe editions of Metal Gear Solid, Metal Gear Solid 2: Substance, Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence, and Metal Gear Solid 4 (but I don't have a PS3 yet).

I got a hankering for a good Samurai or Ninja themed game. Something that would remind me of Kurosawa's films or any overseas ninja films pre-90's.

Something where I be a lone samurai, traveling from town to town freeing helpless villagers from the grip of evil bandits or corrupt lords.

Or some type of ninja game where I can stealthily make my way around a massive trap filled fortress, bypassing guards to reach the evil emperor and take him out with a poison dart.

    Any games like that?

this. when you mentioned being a lone samurai/ninja traveling from town to town freeing villages, that's the first thing I thought of.

Although I still dream dream of a kojima production ninja game set in 16th century japan without the super natural side that tenchu has. But yeah tenchu is one of the best ninja games out there.

The first one to be sure.
I like the series, but it got crazier as it went along with Jean Reno and such.
