Actually, in the United States, the ownership and sale of ambergris is illegal under the Endangered Species Act. Possession of any part of an endangered species, including things they may have horked up, is a direct violation of the ESA.

Not as nasty looking as the description implies, IMO...just kinda looks like a lump of beeswax molded into the shape of a gutpile. I could understand the legal issues if it were something that required the animal to die in order to obtain it, but if its actually just something that the animal leaves behind as waste material, why can't this poor old broad just hawk it? F'ed up world.

Because if you were allowed to sell the stuff, you could also go into the water, cut one out of a live whale, and then pretend that you "found" it. Much more efficient than waiting around for a one-in-a-million chance of finding it washed up on shore. You can bet your ass that more than a couple of people would do exactly that. Same reason you can't sell ivory from an elephant or rhinoceros that died of natural causes.

I was wondering how long it would take for someone to post that...
