Grew up with the franchise from its inception in '84. G1, though shunned by many, has endured well over the years and generations. It amazes me just how much the Movies borrow from the G1 storylines. I mean really, think about it:
    Movie 1 = MTMTE (1-3) + a few elements from TF:TM
Movie 2 = Fire in the Sky + Fire on the Mountain + Heavy Metal War + WW
Movie 3 = The Immobilizer (Carly) + War Dawn (S. Prime / A3) + The Ultimate Doom + City of Steel (1 armed prime) + TF:TM (Such Heroic Nonsense lol) + Megatrons Master Plan

1984. I was ten at the time.
I'm not much one for 'getting into' things these days so if I had become a fan of TF because of the BayFormers movies I don't think I'd have stayed long. Maybe for the toys, but even then probably only a few. I don't think it would've captured my imagination as much as it did back in 1984. I have a mild respect for people that have stayed with Transformers when their gateway series to the franchise were the BayFormers movies. And even more respect for those that have become fans of other TF series beyond that intial Bay movie entrance.

Since 1983 Diaclone / 1984 G1. I grew up with the stuff... then lost interest halfway Action Masters. Re-entered the fandom with the Bay movies.

Unlike many other oldtimers, I do like the movieverse designs.

Been with the franchise since season 3 of Beast Wars. My interest began to fade during Energon, wasn't until Classics and the movies hit that I got hooked. While I acknowledge that the movies are what brought me back full time, its the modern G1 stuff that's kept me interested.

I grew up with RID and maybe some Beast Machines with the toys still being on the shelf at the time. When Toys R Us was selling reissues of G1 Transformers, I knew nothing about them. It wasn't until my dad rented the '86 film that I knew how long Transformers had been around, but back to the point. When RID came out I was hooked and never turned back.

I knew alittlebit about Transformers from my earliest childhood (one of the only things I remembered was Optimus Primes Design and I was immediately stunned when I saw the trailer how well they translated his G1 design into a movie worthy design), but without the movies, I would have never become a "fan".

I watched some of the cartoons as a child, but it went no further until I saw the Film in 2007! Then my fanship started literally from the first day. And it is amazing!

I was never a big fan of transformers prior to the movies except BW, but once the hype became apparent it caught my interest.

    Nope.
With every episode I watched, every comic I purchased and read and every toy I had I hated transformers.

And I've been hating Transformers since about 1984 or so.
