    Hi.

I saw this at the BBC website - quite impressive:

Think of it - nearly seven hundred thousand PS3s in use...

...and not one of them running a game written for the machine.

Sounds par for the course, really.

Just because they signed up doesn't mean that they are currently running the software. I signed up but haven't folded in a couple of months.

The idea is that you're running it when you're not playing games.

Do you really think that all of the other computers belonging to every day users who participate in f@h don't use their PC's for anything else?

Thanks for the report, you fanboyism has been dully registered. :rolleyes2

As mentioned before, people register and usually fold when not at home. I actually get plenty of use out of my PS3 and it will be going into overtime after all the games I plan for x-mas.

I fully intend to buy a PS3 for a couple of games, but the F@H thing is just a nice bonus. I folded for a long time with my PC's but switched to Seti@Home when a buddy of mine got into it instead.

    Sigh.

The comment at the end was an attempt at humour - a poor one, I admit.

But it IS notable that all those PS3s are part of a project entering into the Guinness Book of Records...

...and one which is a positive contribution to modern medicine, too.

If the results from the test help make even one person's life a little better than it was beforehand, I'll be quite pleased.

And surely, isn't that the point of this piece of news?

And for the record, I own neither a PS3 nor a Wii nor a 360 - so I'm not exactly rooting for the others, either.

Hell, the fact that the most recent machine I own is a PSP I got last week would indicate that I'm not exactly anti-Sony.

Well, they are annoying with their pathological need to push proprietary formats, but that's another story...

I just found out yesterday what folding@home was. As soon as I knew what it did I activated it on my PS3. I have since put it on my computers.

and apparently an anti-Sony one at that...

For the record, lots of people consider "humorous" digs at consoles to be not funny at all... I could make some myself, but I don't want to annoy anyone.

*points to the part where he mentioned his recent PSP purchase*

I am not against Sony - but as someone who has dealt with their products for several years in retail, I do get annoyed by their habit of making things awkward.

And I was referring to the joke Matt made with the Blitzwing Lil Formers gag, too - which I doubt was meant to be taken too seriously.

However, I think Sony have gone a very good thing by helping folding@home - and aside from the joke, I DO credit them highly for the initiative shown.

And isn't that the most important thing to consider? That PS3s around the world are helping in this kind of research?

Appologies Nerroth, unfortunately fanboys and trolling have taken the humor out of the little jokes and jabs by overusing them. The tone of the original post did not seem to be a joke, perhaps the use of smileys next time would help convey the intention.

I believe that this " 700,000 PS3s to examine how the shape of proteins affect diseases such as Alzheimer's" is a noble cause.

But where can I sign up to get 700,000 PS3's to calculate why the people at Starbucks can never get my order right?

QFT With Ninja Gaiden, Ratchet, Folklore, Heavenly Sword, and Motorstorm I have been a very busy boy and folding at home is a good thing that should not be taken with a grain of salt, afterall we are helping advance medicine.

not if you look outside the gaming world it's not. all i can think of nintendo doing was making the n64 use carts. sony has a huge history of making audio and video formats that were either flops or only for a niche market
