Our senior directors had a clear-out of some of their junk and offered it up to the rest of us and I snagged this:

It's a radiation detector! It picks up Alpha, Theta and Gamma waves and acts like a datalogger so I can download its readings into my PC like so :)
readings are in micro-sieverts per hour, anything up to 5 isn't threatening, then again iirc at 6 or 7 your skin starts blistering so it's not terribly comforting!
As you can see the levels are very low though so its just background stuff and not dangerous, will have to find out what a Hulk-inducing level of Gamma rays is and go looking though..........

nah, just alpha, theta and gamme, i.e. the really dangerous ones. Tried it next to a CRT TV, mobile phone and the microwave (not all together of course!) and didn't make any difference to the readings

Correct me if I'm wrong....but aren't theta waves released by the brain? Does this thing actually measure your brain waves? Or did you mean beta particles?

You'd have to stick it inside the microwave or disable the mechanism that keeps it from working when the door is open.

We have one of those at work that we've used on a couple goofy ass projects. Try finding an old clock that has the perpetually green glowing hands (the kind that look like green paint is applied to them), maybe you'll be able to pick something up on it. You could also try testing your smoke detector.

What job do you have that would warrant having a radiation detector?

Not a bad question, I work for a medical supplies company so we wouldn't have anything that hazardous on site and I didn't ask our finance director why he had it in the first place...........hmmm..........bit of a mystery.

Maybe he knows something is about to go down. You should report him to the Dept. of Homeland Security.

What were you measuring that gave you that initial spike in the graph?
