I thought this would be a good place to ask, since we have a lot of chem-geeks here, myself included.

I've misplaced an old book I had on chemical magic, and I recall there was a mixture in there that would produce a non-toxic smoke when water was added to it.

Anyone know how to do this? I need it for something in September.

A slightly exothermic reaction won't be a big deal, my costume for the act will be rather fire and heat-resistant due to the fact that I'll be fighting with flaming swords before I need the smoke. :)

    dry ice?

Other than that, the only things that are coming to mind are stuff like lithium or sodium.

Dry ice won't work. I'm talking something that had to be attached to a costume. Thus sodium is a very bad idea.

Basically something that, when exposed to water, creates some smoke or vapor (not an incredible amount) that isn't toxic.

Maybe we're approaching this the wrong way. What about some kind of system like a smoke machine uses, where you have a small heated plate that evaporates a glycol mixture or something?

From a chemical standpoint, I'm having a tough time thinking of anything simple that will react with water to form smoke quickly and violently enough for the effect to work while still being safe and non-toxic.

    There's this stuff, I guess

    and this

But yeah, not safe at all.
