I just rewatched the movie and I thought of something. Was Unicron on his way to Cybertron? Or was it when he "ran into" the Decepticons did he decide to go towards Cybertron?

Hmm, that's a god question. I'm pretty sure that he was searching for the matrix, and Cybertron would have been his best chance at finding it...

I think so, because he says, "I had considered sparing your planet Cybertron."

So he was probably on his way to destroy it.

That quote makes me think he was not going to Cybertron. Maybe he would've steered clear entirely if he didn't think he could get control of the matrix.

No, it was because Galvatron was being a dick to him and not giving him the Matrix. So, as revenge, Unicron ate Galvatron and went to destroy Cybertron.

Well, since he had the Matrix he was going to take down Primus. Those were the only 2 things that could stop him.

He didn't have the Matrix, Galvatron did. He also didn't need to stop Primus, he just needed to get the Matrix, and tried to destroy Galvatron's home planet as "encouragement" for Galvy to give it to him.

Well, if you take into account what the comics would later add to the Unicron story, yeah, he was heading towards, with the deliberate intent of destroying it.

Taking the movie on its own, personally, I like to think that Cybertron is just unfortunate enough to have been the next planet in Unicron's way. Chompy-chompy, then it would have been on to the next course somewhere else. It's a sort of "force of nature" thing, moving forward constantly, just munching up whatever gets in his road indiscriminately. It fits with the notion that he could have "considered sparing it" - if he had no particular grievance against the planet, if it was just whatever unlucky orb that happened to be there, he could have just flown on by it. No skin off his nose whether it gets destroyed or not. But, Galvatron narked him off, so there we go.

The notion that he considered sparing Cybertron doesn't fit at all with with the larger comic storyline, where he was ABSOLUTELY going to destroy it, because it was Primus. Unless he just lied, to rub it in Galvatron's face. Dick.

"It is the one thing, the only thing which can stand in my way." -Unicron

Primus hadn't been thought of at that point, so he doesn't factor into Unicron's motives.

Unicron is a bullshit artist. Megatron gets kicked in his direction and all of a sudden he says he summoned him.

And just before he goes to kill Galvatron, he says "Guess what? I'm gonna destroy your planet and it's YOUR FAULT."

He was gonna do it anyway.

I dunno. In all other cases I can think of, Unicron is perfectly blunt about his motives and what he's going to do. I think Unicron being pure evil and being completely truthful and rational about it makes him all the more terrifying as a monster.

Unicron just wanted to destory the matrix so he could devour the universe. Cybertron was just another planet.
Anywho, Cyberton is not Primus in G1, it was made into a factory world from an organic planet by the Quints.

I NEVER got the impression that the character of Unicron in the movie was BSing. Everything he said was truthful. Why would you have any inclinition to think he was BSing?

Those are my two reasons, right there. He flat-out lies to Megatron.

Then there's all the things he just 'omits.' Like what the Matrix really is, the fact that he can zap galvatron from across the galaxy, that kind of stuff.

He's robot Satan, what do you expect?

    How do we know that?
Which is what? The essence of Primus? That's a retcon that didn't exist yet, so as far as the original script goes, there's no dishonesty there.
    He doesn't say that he can't ;)
He does, however, say "You belong to me now". You don't think he's going to have some control over his property? He's going to do with Galvatron whatever he wants. I think that much is definitely implied.
I'd love to get into a discussion about that, but it would get the thread locked.

he did summon Megatron, after he was tossed out of Astrotrain. he steered him. I think it would be pretty hard for Megatron to just randomly float directly towards Unicron.
