Looks like Marvel and Cryptic Studios not only buried the hatchet, but got all snuggly and close during their courtroom time together. Now they are ready to make a baby with the aid of Dr. Microsoft.

Microsoft and Marvel Entertainment officially confirmed today that Cryptic Studios (City of Heroes, City of Villains) will develop Marvel Universe Online, an MMO for the Xbox 360 and Windows Vista. Whether Marvel Universe Online will work cross-platform, Director of the Game Development Group at Microsoft Scott Henson says, "We haven't confirmed that yet, but that is certainly an option."

Michael Lewis, president of Cryptic Studios says, "Cryptic Studios and Microsoft share a common vision for online gaming and commitment to quality titles. Together we will create a new exciting game that captures the uniqueness of the Marvel IP."

Neat! If they plan on portraying Marvel properly, they better include secret identities. Considering the entire Marvel style is based around the concept that the characters are people first and heroes second.

Because at least half the userbase is going to want to play Spider-Man, Hulk or Wolverine, and that would be shit.

I'd imagine you play as your own superhero and the Marvel super heroes and villains assist/attempt to boil you as you progress.

Looks like it could be awesome.

    Could be. Yes.

It's going to be tricky catching all the kids who want to be Spider-Man.

In the 360 Marketplace video, Captain America had wings on his head. WINGS.

    Looks classic to me.

Magneto was purple though like his Ultimate version.
Could be like Ultimate Alliance and be a mix between both.

I thought this game would let you make an original character that got to interact with the Marvel ones.

I havent played CoH for a while, but one of the things they did implement was costume changes. So if they keep the same thing for the Marvel game, yes you can have a 'secret Identity' look if you want it.

On another note, it's nice to see that not only did Marvel and Cryptic work out their differences, but that Cryptic got the rights to do this. I know they'll handle the property with respect. I suspect, however, that we'll get their OWN universe to play with and will probably be what Cryptic considers a 'best of' for the characters they include.

A CoH/CoV clone for Xbox360 or Windows Vista ? Pass. SoE is looking pretty darn good right now with their DC MMORPG and their no "UPGRADE TO VISTA OR DON'T PLAY" option.
