It made up shit just to make the whole more 'dramatic'. I take that as Michael Bay not really giving a shit about what really happened, and that he just made up stuff to make things more simplistic for the audience.

yes, if you want a true historical account of Pearl Harbor, Bay's Pearl Harbor is not for you. if how ever you want a dramatic movie loosely based on it, Bay's Pearl Harbor is for you.

The problem is Bay went ahead and made up characters, and love stories to make what could have been a great retelling of a historic event, terrible. I'm sure there were some REAL survivors that would have made for great stories in the movie. But Bay apparently didn't give a shit about that. And that actually pisses me off quite a bit.
There are interesting stories behind the survivors of every disaster. If Bay could have done for Pearl Harbor what Oliver Stone did for World Trade Center, chances are the movie would have had been well recieved...

I've always had a feeling that this film was pitched as being like Titanic... a love story set in a tragic historical event.

Michael Bay's Pearl Harbor was amazing because of his unprecadented access to the military and their equipment, along with how far technology has come in terms of explosions and making realistic battle scenes.

However, his inability to tell a story, and his rather over-dramatized "made-up" story, really hurt the movie. The movie itself was great - but it is seen as an abysmal attempt at a historical re-telling of one of the great tragedies of United States history. People saw a made-up story and started debating what other events were made-up in the historical side of his telling of Pearl Harbor.

Not like Titanic has room to speak, but it had that stupid song and Leo in it.

Pretty much like everyone said, it was a fine movie, just did a shit job of portraying what actually happened.

You know a Pearl Harbor movie is bad when they can't even get the color scheme of the Japanese warplanes right.

the cast- ok. I liked alec baldwin in it.
    everything else- wrong.

Historically, Tora! Tora! Tora! was perfect. dramatically, it was on the stiff side. but it was still good.

in the end, PH was a dud because it took an epic day of tragic Awesome and decided it wasn't Bay enough.
Armageddeon was a BS man-story, but it was sci-fi and we were given the okay to make fun of it. but PH is just a sad cinematic moment.

Agreed. It wasn't a documentary made for the History Channel. It was a fictional tale anchored with historical events. No different than Titanic, National Treasure, Indiana Jones, etc. It never claimed to be an exact retelling with real people who were there. But if you take the time to watch the extras (which I know many of you will not. Your loss) you will see they went to great lengths to get the history correct. The lone pilot who did get off the ground, the raiders, the ignoring of the Japanese attack and many more. It's just easier to write if off as Baysplosions than it is to accept it may actually be a decent movie.

I didn't care about the historical inaccuracy. It was just an awful movie.

I also got the sense that they only made it because of the success of Titanic. Promotion for the movie portrayed it as another epic love story against a backdrop of historic tragedy. Which only made Michael Bay's bizarre comedy stylings all the more out of place.

Personally it was the movie where I came to the conclusion that Michael Bay was to be avoided. Then they had to go and give him Transformers.

Uh? I think the japanese planes in WWII had two color schemes. The white and then the green.

yes they did but none of the planes at Pearl Harbor featured the green color scheme as that was initially used for land based planes to hide them from aircraft above them.

They were pressed into service on carriers later due to plane shortages and used in Kamikaze attacks aplenty.

I am sure Nachtsider will correct me if i got my facts mixed up.
