http://news.yahoo.com/s/ap/20071211/ap_on_re_us/word_of_the_year Anyone else find it sad that the word of the year isn't even a fucking word?!
w00t! Sorry, I just had to. Getting back on topic, I find it very annoying that they let such words into the dictionary. However, these are words of the current time, and lie deep within our current pop culture. Same thing goes for words and slang terms used by past generations and old English words that we no longer use. No one goes around saying "tubular" or "hearken" these days. So it'd be wrong of us to protest against them. 15-20 years from now, our kids will have their own words, and think of w00t! as a thing of the past.
It's not clear to me from the article that it's actually going to be added to the dictionary. Just that it's their Word of the Year. (How would you alphabetize that? Before "wack" or after "wyvern"? )
Heh. I would've prefered Incomplete Skywarp's "WOOP!", but I understand it's not as widely used. W00t indeed. EDIT: The fuck is EVOO?
I think 'sould' should have been nominated. 'Lolcat' might have been a fun entry- especially if a picture was included.
Lolcat - lawl-cat Funny-ass cat with witty caption. >pic< see also Icanhascheezburger. We need to seriously update our dictionaries. (Or as my old law teacher called them: Dick... tionaries!)
It's a ******ed thing from Rachel Ray. I wouldn't have even thought of it if we didnt have a thread about it recently. Heh, your mom.
"It shows a really interesting thing that's going on in language." Yeah, that as a society, we're getting dumber. The Great Dumbening has begun.
Languages evolve. It doesnt mean we're getting dumber, it just means things change. Words get added and dropped from common usage all the time.
That's cool And for the one's left out, there's always the urban dictionary http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=1337
Yeah, it's the initials for Extra Virgin Olive Oil, something Rachel Ray uses gratuitously in her kitchen and bedroom.
