Finally got around to doing a custom Ironhide. I hate the CW pickup truck mold, but I really like the First-Aid/Ratchet SUV re-tool. My initial plan was to repaint a First-Aid, replacing the head with CW Ironhide’s head, similar to a digibash I had seen.
Finding a KO OS First-Aid on SirToys gave me the opportunity to make a Voyager sized version instead. Mixed in some odds and ends (weapons, a new head, etc) from other figures/toys to come up with the finished product.

Sorry, robot mode pics didn’t attach for some reason. Here they are:

Ha, I actually tried to do that!

Problem is, the key to that scene is the view of the back of Ironhide’s head, as he looks up hopelessly at the barrel of the fusion canon. But with this particular mold, the car hood ‘hoodie’ makes that view impossible. Bummer...

Amazing work! I like the choice of metallic paint for the windows. It gives them a little extra something over just plain blue or straight clear.

Thanks! I never get a good result brush-painting windows, and it’s technically difficult to mask and spray into small, recessed areas. So I came up with another solution: I sprayed metallic paint (Testors One-Coat Lacquer, Ice Blue) onto clear plastic, then I cut the painted plastic into the shape of each individual window. That way, the edges of each window would be sharp, with no paint bleed or over-spray. I glued them into place painted side down, so the clear, unpainted side was facing out, producing a glassy sheen (similar to what was done with the G1 Dinobots).

    Painted side:

I want to do this so bad for both ironhide and ratchet. But finding the ko's on eBay has been...problematic. I like the work you did. How did you do the bot mode windshield and head?

Wow, that scales out suprisingly well. Really like what you've done.

Strangely, these KOs are quite easily available here in the UK, and have just been reduced to only £3.99! Sorely tempted to do this myself!

I got the KO from SirToys. It’s still available for ~$15.

The bot mode faux windshield is composed of three layers: a mounting piece, a “glass” piece, and a frame piece. To achieve the characteristic angle of Ironhide’s chest, I considered joining two separate pieces of plastic at an angle. But that would have left a seam where they met, and I wanted a smooth finish. So I found a section of plastic on a defunct CVS R/C car that had the angle I was looking for:
    A9414828-511D-457C-A7FF-E25210000BA0.jpeg

I cut that to the desired size, then filed down the central bump of the figure’s chest so the new chest wouldn’t protrude too much or drag on the ground in truck mode:
    B59CBD28-0477-4089-870C-671779C94A26.jpeg

Once I filed down the central bump of the combiner peg to the desired angle, I painted and mounted the plastic piece, like this:
    79DEA34C-9ACD-4FFB-8964-D9303B78A6A9.jpeg
    B5AAE718-3192-4D62-8216-65CC825720E9.jpeg

I wanted the chest to have that framed, inlaid glass windshield look, so I searched for another angled piece I could lay on top of the new chest mount I had made. I lucked out when I found such a piece on an old diecast scale camper (again from CVS!) in my son’s big box o’ toy cars. I don’t have a pic of the intact camper, but the relevant portion looks like this:
    93A7315C-C782-4767-B7CD-52B14796D780.jpeg

I cut out the overhang portion of the camper, widened the central window, then trimmed it to size:
    A4F5FC97-B7DE-4958-9BF1-4DD56ACAD4B8.jpeg

I sanded, washed, and painted the camper piece. I cut out a piece of painted clear plastic (see my previous post) and glued it to the chest mount on the figure, then glued on the modified camper piece over top, as a frame for the window. The end result is what you see:
    7D697766-C7DE-4A60-81EA-7E7E48A88250.jpeg

The faux chest prevents full rotation of the combiner peg, so you lose combining function. But that’s a moot point, given this figure is Voyager size and hence incompatible with regular sized combiner figures anyway. The chest also has plenty of clearance in truck mode, so there’s absolutely no drag. And I actually like how the new chest sort of fills out the underside of the truck, too:

Sorry for the super long post ... I wouldn’t have been able to explain it without pictures. Hope that helps!

    Regarding the head:

Since my original plan was to customize a Deluxe First-Aid, I was resigned to using the CW Ironhide head. It’s not a bad sculpt, per se, but it’s a bit too spherical.

Once I found the OS KO, however, I needed to find a Voyager-sized head. This is where I got really lucky. Last December, I had ordered a Fancy Cell Toys Transportation Captain (Astrotrain) on eBay. It arrived in a totally smashed-up box, and despite wearing his rubber-band seatbelt, ol’ Astrotrain didn’t survive the trip:
    35F654B5-30AC-4469-9232-92435F9301B0.jpeg

The seller gyhjj88_0 (who is outstanding and deserves your business) promptly sent me another one and told me to keep the broken one. And Transportation Captain’s head-sculpt has a very Ironhide vibe:
    5CDBCB7C-D0AE-4AC5-B289-67D0717B26DB.jpeg

So I took apart that head and reshaped it a bit, filing down his cheek-guards and rounding off the bottom. Then I painted the eyes blue and helmet red:
    66F82ABF-9C0E-4B93-8A9D-5F8C34AE63E9.jpeg

The guns were appropriated from Prime/RID Arms Micron Kup. I just dry-brushed some silver over them. The axe that came with the OS KO was all black and had a 7 mm handle, so I cut that off and replaced it with a piece of a 5 mm diameter plastic rod (which was used as a handle for a helium balloon my kids got at a birthday, and which I snagged once I realized how useful it would be in customizing weapons). I repainted the whole thing black, then drybrushed the axe handle and painted the blade silver:

The whole thing is truly a Frankenstein...

Is the mid leg rotation standard on your KO, or did you add that in? Mine doesn't have that :/
