    FINISHED! Voyager Classics Grimlock/Dark Retribution

I saw the amazing custom by RodimusDawg and decided I needed to try this out myself. I picked up the oversized KO grimlock from KOToys and the beast machines megatron tail off ebay. I have him stripped down and ready for paint but I decided to try something a little different this time.

I'm going to post WIP shots each step of the way to give some insight into my process and also put the paint scheme up to a vote.

    G1 or Dark Retribution?

I'm also considering some battle damage wear and tear so all opinions are welcome.

Dark Retribution reference: (I'll probably do silver or gold, not both)

    Update 4/18

Update! Added Photoshop paint over of one of my previous photos. I will generally do this before painting to determine a good balance between colors. Using more than 4 colors is risky unless you have a good understanding of color theory. Otherwise your custom can look noisy and chaotic leading your viewers eye to no area in particular which is detrimental towards creating a presence with your custom.

Just create another layer in your PSD and set it to overlay and paint over the areas you want!

This was a great project and I had a lot of fun with painting such a large figure. Thanks to Boggs6ft7 for the metallic decals. Here is a link to his thread. I highly recommend them! Also, thanks to Sarakawa for letting me borrow his Classics Grimlock for the pictures.

Work in progress images can be seen from top to bottom in the attachments.

    As always, C&C welcome!

Dark Retribution would make a nice change. :)
As for either Gold or silver, gold would suit him well I think.

    WOOT!!!

Not to try and sway you or anything but Dark Retribution would be SICK!!!! Would you go with like a black peral or just a straight gloss black?

But then again a battle damaged G1ish would be particularly sweet as well. Damn it all to hell. :banghead:

And I if you can pick one up cheap the BWTM Megatron ankle/calfs mkae a good fill for the empty place in the same area of the KO grimlock.

If you're going to get the Materpiece Grimlock for your Classics, then might as well do Dark Retribution. If not, then don't you want a good sized G1 Grimmy towering over the Classics?

I wanted to get the whole BWTM Megatron, but all I could get in time was the tail piece, so the legs will have to remain hollow for the time being. I was trying to find something that would work for the big hole in the back of the head too... I might have to get some styrene and make a custom piece.

Well the support for a dark retribution grimmy is overwhelming. Time to get painting.

    Thanks for all the replies!

This is going to be awesome.

Oh by the way, does the KO Grimlock feel anything like the classics one? Just asking :l

The plastic is definitely thinner, and the joints around the legs are really loose. I couldn't get the body shell to snap together without using a file and grinding down the pegs to fit. It's mostly hollow on the inside too which isn't a big deal unless he's in robot mode. Overall I'd say it was worth the $8

The big downside is the tail he comes with isn't articulated so it looks stiff and kind of goofy. Replacing the tail with a BWTM Megatron tail was easy and definitely the way to go.

I'd say Dark Retributions but with black silver and bronze. Not a fan of chromed gold on toys.

To answer your question, I think you'd need to first answer "what is the destination of this piece?" If it's for your own collection, I think you'd be the best judge of what to do. If you're wanting to make this only to sell it, gauge the responses and go that route.

    I wish you well :thumb

Thanks! I have a small legion of almost all black decepticons on my desk at work, so I envision this one joining the ranks for the time being. I'm at that phase of not being able to let go of a custom that I've spent a good deal of time on even though the offers I've been receiving have been really tempting. I wish I could do this full time like my heroes FR, and encline :inquisiti

    Thanks!

I have to tighten up some of the joints and and then paint all the fun little details to really make it pop. I'll take some proper pictures with 3 point lighting and my SLR when I'm done.

I like it, bit I was hoping for it to be darker. The drybrushing really lightened it up. That's a small crtit, the paintjob looks awesome.
