Doctors save man with vodka drip
Australian doctors have kept an Italian tourist alive by feeding him vodka through a drip for three days, medical staff in Queensland say.
The 24-year-old man, who had swallowed a poison in an apparent suicide attempt, was treated while in a coma.

Doctors set up the drip after running out of medicinal alcohol, used as an antidote to the poison.

Medical staff said the patient had made a full recovery, and the hangover had worn off by the time he woke up.

He had been taken to hospital in the northern Queensland town of Mackay after swallowing ethylene glycol - a poison contained in anti-freeze.

"The patient was drip-fed about three standard drinks an hour for three days in the intensive care unit," Dr Todd Fraser said in a statement.

"Fortunately for him he was in a medically induced coma for a good portion of that. By the time he woke up I think his hangover would have well and truly gone."

He spent 20 days in hospital before being discharged.

This is actually standard treatment for those who drink antifreeze or methanol, aka wood alcohol.

Sadly, I'm actually not joking about it. I'm sure squirrelcar will agree.

Before anyone else can do it: In Russia, Vodka poisons you! Yeah, there we go, now no one else can make that lame-ass joke.

Very interesting way of dealing with the poison. Learn something new every day.

Basically the antifreeze gets broken down by a liver enzyme and the antifreeze crystalizes in the liver, causing damage. If you get enough ethanol into the liver, it ends up competing with the antifreeze to be broken down by the liver enzymes. You do the same treatment for methanol. Even though methanol won't form any crystals, it can and will cause blindness.

In the version of the story I read, it seemed more "newsworthy" that the guy's treatment burned through the hospital's supply of medicinal-grade ethanol, forcing them to go buy vodka.

Edit: Thanks fresh, I was just gonna ask about the mechanism. So, ethanol takes priority in being metabolised if you load up a liver with enough of it, causing the antifreeze or methanol to be excreted without any processing - is that it?

Yep, you basically beat out the competition (antifreeze) by sheer numbers and brute force.

    Medical high-five!

Never seen it done, but it's apparently not only the standard treatment, it's also the only treatment. Heard it's kinda common in the Appalachians, though.

Aww yeah, medical geekiness FTW! I think on an episode of House, House ends up doing shots with LL Cool J after he drank a bunch of ethylene glycol.

Yep. Was really an interesting episode in terms of "that's cool to know but I don't know when I'll need to know it"

Squirrelcar- I agree... House is just TV medical assery... And it really went down hill since the new season started.

Yup, anti-freeze ingestion is exactly why we keep a stash of Vodka at the animal hospital I work at...

    ...for the patients of course.
