I figured this would be helpful and informative to all of us. In here let's post some computer virus stories, resolutions, and everything in between.

I'll start, I think I just got tricked into deleting my Win32 file, because a Trojan was attached to it!

Downloaded a movie torrent once that was lined with all sorts of problems. One of which was porn ads that popped up every 30 minutes or so. I was talking with my aunt once and had my word processor running and one popped up.

    THAT was embarrassing...

I use both quite frequently, but there's nothing, nothing, like a good ol' PC and Windows

A couple months ago I went to the MS update site (the only reason I even still have IE on my system) and downloaded a rootkit and two trojans along with what I actually wanted. It took a week of daily work with the experts at whatthetech.com to get rid of that damned rootkit.

I really want to switch to Ubuntu (Linux), but its iffy at best as to whether it will work with my old dialup modem or not, and the BIOS aren't cooperating. So that's on hold for now.

To all who don't have anti-virus because it costs money, there are several anti-virus programs for free.

    My recommended is Avast!

For keeping cookies clean, and history cleared (plus more), use CCleaner

And for that damned Malware, none other than Malwarebytes

Sure until you have a logicboard fail and you then have $1000+ bill.

using a mac for the last 5-6 years, so yeah, no logicboards breaking or viruses. also, can people grow some nut hair and not turn this into mac v pc please, gtfu.

i did once have a really odd virus on my pc, back with windows 98, there was a spinning hypno disc in the middle of my screen, over the top of everything. i could still use the os, and it all seemed to work fine, except the disc was there all the time...

it was exactly like this had been put over my screen: http://www.subliminalmessages.com/images/h6.gif

fixed it by formatting my hdd :/

Norton Anti-virus, should be named a virus.

Something that infests your computer, rapes rescources while keeping your computer running slow and cannot be 100% removed.

    wth? o_O

i'm usually pretty savvy since even as a...casual? user i know how to tinker with the registry and monitor msconfig startup for irregularities. but recently i totally got duped by this virus that masquearades as 'new folder' which after clicking i noticed, wtf's a folder with a 30mb file size OH SHI ITS A TRAP! sneaky bastards, these virus programmer chaps.

found a fix online and had to go into the registry and fix some entries, no prob, but sure wasted a lotta time i coulda use for constructive stuff. like looking at cat pictures and video of boobies.

My wife had two really nasty viruses on her PC. My best guess is they came through Facebook and one of its games/apps.

The first had a notification that would constantly pop up. I did a search for it and all that came back and every link was a $30 piece of software to remove the virus. It was the "only way" to get rid of it. I downloaded Comcast's free virus software (I think it was McAfee at the time) and got rid of it.

The second would redirect every search you did, regardless of the search engine and browser. I never was able to figure out what it was or any way to get rid of it. Eventually it borked the whole OS and a fresh install cleared it up.
