I actually read both recently via the Essential Spider-Man Vol. 1 and Spider-Man: Birth of Venom TPBs.

Sandman's origin is pure Silver Age hilarity. I mean, he takes a high school hostage, demanding a diploma, only to be defeated by a vaccuum cleaner? And THIS mort is both Tobey Maguire's and Sam Raimi's favorite character? Yeesh.

Venom's origin I'd actually read via the Spider-Man: McFarlane Collection TPBs, but had never read all the build-up with the symbiote which lead up to Venom's origin.

Venom seemed soooo much cooler back in the early 90's when I was in elementary school. Reading the stuff now...not so much.

Still, at least his origin had decent build-up and a better backstory than Sandman's.
