USA Today put out the below linked article today. While the Optimus Prime one shot was revealed at Botcon and SDCC, this has major spoilers about where Chaos is heading and the aftermath. Click at your own risk. R.I.P. Optimus Prime? Big changes for IDW's 'Transformers'
Ahahah USA Today thinks Optimus Prime dying is a new and earthshattering change, especially in the comics.
Been reading the IDW series for the entire run. I think this is the 2nd or 3rd time they've killed him. Still I am tired of this gimmick. It traumatized me in childhood dammit! The recent issue, I believe it was #22, was one of the best OP/Megatron conversations ever. Wish they wouldn't do this but obviously they want some PR
It would've been nice to keep it a secret. But even then the only surprise would be whether or not he comes back...
Killing main characters is a cheap gimmick to sell comic books. So long as people keep falling for it (and publishers like USA Today keep giving them publicity for it), comic publishers will keep doing it. If I hadn't already dropped the book, I'd drop it until Prime came back (and I'd wait an issue or two after his return and not give them money for the also gimmicky "Return of Optimus Prime" issue).
Same here but really it's the 1st time he died. In AHM, he was near death. But I would rather him "disappear" into the Matrix or something than flat out die.
Roberts was excellent at writing him, and Furman was alright. Everyone else is too busy looking up to OP as "that father-figure from the 80's", and are scared to take him in any other logical direction.
Now if he'd just stay dead like he should have in the first place in 1986 that would be a Major Spoiler.
I'm looking forward to it. It will be a shame to see Optimus go (even if the IDW version was a bit questionable), but after this Costa will be gone and Barber and Roche/Roberts take over, with hopefully Rodimus stepping up as the new leader. That is something I am really looking forward to, and it can't come soon enough.
He can come back after lying down for awhile like in AHM. I am looking forward to that too. I enjoyed some of my limited exposure to the UK stuff with Rodimus.
The question is though, will Hasbro allow that much freedom in their comics. Seems a lot of the things going on have to have their approval, esp major characters.
They really need to get this TF house in order. Killin' off Optimus is unoriginal and not really a new idea, IDW!! I think separate series is the right way to do it. G1 Season 1&2 bots on Earth - one series, G1&2 Seasons 3&4 and some Japanese series in Space/Cybertron - another series, Marvel continuation #81 on to #100 - another series, separate continuity, A cross over a year to bring the two teams together every now and then.
Like my friend said once "Optimus comes back from the dead so often, he has a room on reserve in Heaven for quick visits."
THIS^ I like the idea of how the japanese cartoon series did it because you would see others in the leadership roles without killing every leader. Sub commanders would be great because this would be a great way to have daiatlas and starsaber in there every once in while at least. TF animated also had more than one prime so it is possible to tell a story of a different leader without killing optimus. That has been overdone.
