I've read the tutorials and it actually seems pretty straight forward to do this. I just wanted to know if there are any tips/advice I should know about before I dive in. For those who have done it/know someone who has done it, what else do I need to know other than the basics (back up your data, don't strip the blue screw)?

    Thanks in advance!

When you backup your data, you must use a fat32 usb hard drive. New versions of XP and Vista do not allow you to format any drives to fat32. You need to download a third party app. I used one called Swiss Army Knife. Also, download the latest PS3 image from Sony.

Well, just backup all your files on a external hard drive or Flash drive. Pretty easy, it will take some time however.

I knew about the FAT32 file system and have an external HD ready to go, but I might need to repartition it for that section to cover the back-up space. Does that Sony back-up software compress everything or is it byte for byte transfer?

Its very simple, just make sure to have the correct small phillips screwdriver and don't scrape off the threads on the screws. It takes about 15 minutes, just transfer all your saved data to a USB thumb drive before removing your old hard drive.
