What program are you using? You are working a lot harder than you need to, and providing a worse result because of it.

I like where the idea is going and the general G1 homage deal, but I would love to see a Classics Ratchet in another form than a re color

I agree with you Dak. Unfortunately, a recolor is imminent. It only needs a lightbar across the top, red crosses on the shoulders, white body coloring, and a Prowl head to make the character complete. I figured Prowl's head would be the best for the horns on the top of the head. Not only that, but it's already white to start with.

From the alt mode, I'd like to see a Trailbreaker repaint peronally. With a new head it could work.

I'm hoping that Trailbreaker gets his own mold, something in a Voyager.

Easy... Hasbro does one, and Takara releases the other through the Henkei line. :)

Both look nice to me, I'll be quite satisfied with either version.

Personally, I prefer the comic version of the two. The cartoon looks okay, but I think it's overall too white, which looks bland to me. The red helmet of the comics looks more visually interesting.
At the moment, though, I'm not a big fan of this mould at all; I'm after a different design for both Ratchet and Ironhide.

Little tip for that. Instead of just overlaying the white on top of the red, isolate the red on the layer underneath, desaturate it and maybe play with the brightness and contrast. That'll at worst get you a light grey. It's very difficult to get a good white while digibashing, but you can get close.
