I heard their was only one proto left from the late 80s/early 90s...

But now I see it in many peoples collections...

So was the mold copied and units sold ?

If so where can I buy it ?

How big is it, near fort max size ?

There was..........two, or maybe three i think?

The rumor was that one of them fell into private hands, and was sold on some time ago for around 10K (?)

Whoever owns that proto now, is keeping well quiet about it.

    This sounds familiar........

I'm not getting your "This sounds familiar........" do you mean alot want proto ?

    Also thank you for info.

Does anybody know the proto size?

If there was only 3, that is odd...as it is in 7 collections I saw...

I doubt seven of them even exist.

At least one is in Takara's hands if my memory is correct.

And on "This sounds familiar", we used to have occasional posts from someone looking to buy one.

"Many people's collections"... Are you sure you're not just seeing the same prototype shown in different settings / with different backgrounds!

No I'm not. Are you sure they are just different backrounds not different owners having different protos? Neither of us know. But doing a google search I saw 7 different collections having him. Maybe its same guy showing him in different rooms...but I doubt it.

    a 4th :

    a 5th :

    a 6th :

etc...unless it gets sold once in a while to another owner, or its one owner with different backrounds ???

It did get loaned out a bit but I'm pretty sure there is only 2 known and one known to be privately owned. I'm hoping there is enough pictures to have a KO made or a custom.

A KO/third party reproduction might be cool. Just looking at that handful of photos up there shows there's a pretty good starting point of reference material for reproducing the figure. It's a fairly simple piece to begin with so that's a bonus right there, and the photo with Fort Max is useful for the scale.

^ Well, there ya go then. If I was in the reproduction-making business I'd be grabbing everything there to scrutinize like a mofo.

Many of those photos show the same toy at different conventions. What makes you think these are different toys in different people's collections? Especially since the photo you label with "a 5th" is over a decade old.

There are two known prototypes: Hasbro (yellow/blue) and Takara (yellow/green).

I can't imagine KOing this would be a profitable venture.

To Nevermore member, look at the pics closely, theres 3 or 4 clearly with different paint and one I posted above has same mold but again different...why is everyone saying these proto are "the same toy at different conventions" no I dont get that from pics sorry, you have a fact I dont know of ? Because I posted alot of pics, and half are different toys completely it seems but use same mold.

And what does the age of photo have to do with anything?

The proto was made in late 80s so theres pics very old big deal...clearly some pics I posted have it in collections...ONLY 2 of the pics I posted are from tf unicron wiki page though...there are more pics of this toy in peoples bedrooms how do you explain that ? (those arent conventions)

This is obviously custom based on the g1. Pretty cool, I didn't realize someone did this.

I think , if Has tak released an encore of this, it would do surprisingly well. There are loads of us G1 only guys who would eat it up.

according to the tfwiki it's only seen in print so we know it's lost in limbo BUT reverse engineering and talking with the original design team would be a sinch. Problem is it'd be a takara only release as I see the drop test fail although a smaller version would be nice. Say 10 to 12 inches like the newer one. I'd pay a buck fitty for dat yo :D .

If you have any new facts please feel free to add them to TFwiki. But online research only doesn't really count as facts. Talk to some people at the conventions. Get in contact with the last known owner. You'll be amazed how much info there isn't online. Talk to Hasbro and takara representatives at conventions and then conclude what you will after.

The Unicron prototype was always a mystery. Even in the old days of ATT (alt.toys.transformers newsgroup) But ever since it's showing in 1996 at botcon a lot of info was released. Even in the japanese generations books etc are interviews (in japanese) about this prototype and the BWneo prototype.

good luck with your research and I look forward to the updates.

    Agreed iDark and Chad...

It just seems there is 3 proto at least since the plastics are different colors but same mold from pics I posted, no fact just observation...I dont think the "there is only one proto just in different places fact" is correct either though. Like everyone else, I'm just curious...

This one looks like arm is too loose to stay up or broke while others are intact but colors are different :

What weird is the body extends up but only the "custom" pic and tf wiki # 1 pic shows the body extended.
