I think the reason the TFA writers made UM the Supreme Commander of the Autobots so they could have a morally......."adjustive" leader.

-In Mission Accomplished, he states that they (the Elite Guard and Optimus's crew) must lie to their fellow Autobots regarding Megatron's fate and the shattering of the AllSpark.

-In Rise of Safeguard, he states he can't "waste" Elite Guard resources on the project.

-And finally, in the flashback showing Omega's construction, he says "We're at war, soldier....we do what we must.", referring to creating sentient WMD with limited mental capacity, so it can't consider the implications of its acts.

When you think about it, they couldn't do this with Optimus Prime, because Prime is meant to be the paragon of virtue, but with Ultra Magnus, we have a character leading the Autobots who will cross the line to get the job done.

Well, in the movie (2007), Optimus said that rescuing Bumblebee wasn't a priority in the light of getting the AllSpark away from the 'Cons. Since that BB is a highly popular character, alot of people probably didn't like that decision one bit.

True, I forgot about that, but I still think UM would be less bothered about.

He couldn't rescue Bumblebee without killing humans.

Anyways, I think Optimus Prime might be going towards this kind of personality, but maybe with a bit/lot more heart. Look at TransWarped, he was about to do something that risked Sari's-and his team's- lives just to keep Starscream Supreme from getting to Cybertron and/or destroying Detroit.

You're all reading too much into this...

There's a simple answer as to why Ultra Magnus is the way he is:

He simply can't deal with it now...

This Ultra Magnus seems like he can deal with things.

It's just the way it is, now deal with it!

I think I have to agree though. Ultra Magnus is a less defined character than the super-do-gooder Optimus Prime, pinnacle of al that is just. Animated UM is definitely a more realistic leader (and probably more capable as well if real life world rules would apply).

One more small bit that shows UM as a cold leader: when he talks to Ratchet about Arcee, he talks about her as if she is a expendable bot, never calling her by name, to which Ratchet gets annoyed.

Just curious, am I the only one who cracked up imagining Magnus saying "because we can" after "we do what we must"? (/Portal overdose)

Yeah, I agree with what's been said. It's becoming, in my mind, more a black and gray morality.

It's from the "Rise of Safeguard" comic that comes in the twopack.

I like Magnus being a more complex character, one who has to make the tough choices, and has become ethically complicated by making them rather then some (or another) Randian Hero.

I think its more about characters now, not all the good guys have to be shitting rainbows like in the 80`s. He is a tough bot, from a tough war.

If anyone knows what I'm talking about, but does Ultra Magnus remind anyone of a Warhammer 40k Space Marine?

He's just got this whole "larger than life" stature going for him. Plus that hammer he's got is kinda seems like a Terminator's Thunder Hammer.

This crossed my mind recently, after playing DoW2. Thunder/Daemon/Force Hammer ftw.

Maybe Ultra Magnus is just a dick?

Yes he can, and G1 Magnus could have too.

The irony of that infamous line in TFTM is the fact that that actually showed Magnus' proficiency and maturity as a soldier and leader.

(DISCLAIMER: I'm not military and have the utmost respect for them. If I'm coming off half-cocked, I apologize in advance...)

Think about it: You're mired in battle and leading a band of troops when the next thing you hear is that a couple of your buddies are dead. Sure, you want to shut down and mourn, but you can't because you have to focus on the task at hand.

While I think that Stack's delivery of that line indicated that Magnus may be a wussy, that's what I think that line means.

Also note that when you actually watch Season 3, Ultra Magnus does just as much, if not more leading than Rodimus. Why do you think Magnus went after Rodimus during the Hate Plague?

When Magnus said "I cant deal with that right now", I knew he had to focus on the situation at hand, he was being shot at after all. I understood what was going on.

I do enjoy the internet jokes that poke fun at him though.
