Easiest explanation:Loeb forgot he was writing the Ultimates, and thinks he is writing a 616 book, while Joe Mad just thinks that hammer looks cool.

Yeah, V3 is pish. That's all I've got to say on the matter. So far it seems irredeemable.

Actualy the easiest explanation would be: "It's magic, we don't have to explane it." :D

Read the preview just confirms that Ultimates 3 is lame.

I was thinking the same thing.

And I don't care for the series thus far but the whole "Didn't you used to have a wife and 2 kids?" comment made the whole 5 issues worth the $15 I'm paying for it. That was stone cold harsh.

What was great about Ultimates v1&2 was that it was believable (within the realm of fantasy). It felt like a movie or a well done television series.

I get the feeling that the new creative team truly doesn't "get it". They seem to think that the idea of the Ultimates is just taking 616 and making it as over-the-top and extreme as possible. It feels like an excuse to squeeze as many under the arm boob-shots and sensationalism into as little space as possible. It just feels ridiculously over-blown right now.

That said I'll keep reading it, if only to see how it ends and because I still do like Mad's art in all it's big-hootered glory.

    Agreed, well said man.
If only he didn't sabotage his own work by insisting the colorist color over the pencils and skip the inking stage altogether.

Why else would they go back to what feels comfortable, otherwise?

Exhibit A: they went back and made the costumes more like 616. More costume, than uniform....just like 616...Tony's an alcoholic again, *yawn*...and Thor's hammer being 616 instead of ultimate? Either bad storytelling or someone going back to "what they know".

    rehashing isn't re-imagining. It's just re-hashing.

It's turning into "hero's reborn" rather than "ultimate".

Still, I can't seem to stress "big-hootered" and "glory" enough....

Now you raise a lot of good points but I thought I would mention that Ultimate Tony was already an alcoholic it's just in the Ultimates and UIM he was a happy/party alcoholic vs the mean drunk/sloppy, wreckless alcoholic that 616 Tony is.

I'm just sad that the greatness that was Ultimates 1-2 could not have continued. I mean I would still love to see the story on the big screen play as the characters in a fighting game(Ultimate Marvel vs Street Fighter/Capcom on the new SFIV engine anyone?)
