UK films urged to be more 'mainstream'

    If it means less costume drama/"historical" stuff/The Kings Speech then that's fine by me.

    I think it's a fine line here since it could be argued that all funding was cut....

    I find it fascinating that something can be created to be mainstream, because of course the UK tries to make films that don't do as well as Holywood ones.

    Only supporting films that might be popular before they're made sounds like a bad plan, following that kind of idea set we would be robbed of cult films that then go on to be iconic.

    Would Shaun of the Dead have been made if it went before a panel to decide if it would be a 'blockbuster' the answer is maybe and even then there would have been far more interference. I think there is a big misunderstanding here since no studio really wants to make a film that isn't going to be popular.

    I guess to some degree they have to go where the money is, even if that means losing a lot of what makes british cinema and tv unique.

    the thing with cinema and tv is you can't tell how something is going to turn out until it has been made.

    That's true, but you can cater to a select audience from the very beginning, and do a number of other things to improve the chances of success.
