I heard something on espn about there might be a new football league created called the UFL. Has anyone else heard about this?
ESPN.com for the win. I read it today. It won't happen. (synopsis: Mark Cuban wants to start an 8 team football league to compete with the NFL. ESPN.com is running a story.)
The league that brought us "He hate me" I don't think this league is going to last if it even gets off the ground. World League tried something by being international (with teams in the US), but now they're the NFL's developmental league. Arena Football is a nice diversion, but it's like the Pheonix Suns of football: All scoring, all the time.
Let's see history of competition: AFL (1960) - began merger with NFL in 1966 (though wasn't finalized until 1970) WFL (1973) - folded in 1975 USFL (1982) - folded in 1985 XFL (2001) - folded in 2001 Yeah, I don't see this league working either. The only way I see it working is if the owners are smart about it and don't in-fight. USFL probably would've been good competition for NFL if they hadn't been arguing amongst themselves. They played in the spring so that really gave America more football and a reason why they were successful, but the Donald wanted to move them to the fall.
UFL's goal is to bring football to markets that don't have a football team (Los Angelas, Mexico City, San Antonio, Orlando, Nashville, etc.) and then try and compete around the same time as the NFL. It'll fail. Horribly. But may be good for a laugh or too. The XFL failed because it was pretty much WWE but with spandex.
