Obesity is defined here as a BMI equal to or above 30. Source data is here (select "Overweight and Obesity" from the Category drop-down and then "Weight Classification by Body Mass Index").

BMI is a flawed system IMO. There are a lot of athletes that are in top notch shape that would be considered obese according to BMI.

    Woo, go Massachusetts!

Actually, it makes perfect sense why MA is so healthy; chalk it up to same-sex marriage. Now that the legislature has defeated the constitutional amendment to ban it by a vote of 151 - 45, marriage-minded gays are flocking to the commonwealth in droves. And do you really think gays will allow themselves to be big fat sacks of crap? Yeah, no.

Don't believe me? Take a look at Rhode Island - RI gays are allowed to get married in MA and have their marriages recognized in RI.

Futher proof? Vermont. Vermont has had civil unions on the books for years! Connecticut? Civil unions since 2005, with a proposal to change the wording to "marriage" circulating through the courts now! Hawaii? Hawaii has oddly-worded domestic partnerships.

As for Colorado, you can thank all those hippies out in Boulder eating lots of fiber and communing with nature. And for Montana? I think there's about 12 people in that state and they don't have cars yet.

I agree, BMI is definitely flawed. But as a tool to give a general picture of American obesity, I think it's workable.

At least, it's accurate enough to let us know there's a huge--no pun intended, but I'll take it--problem.

The athlete thing just doesn't account for enough individuals to dismiss the data out of hand.
