I apologize in advance for this thread. We've had quite enough chat about the relative success of the PS3 and Wii, but this did pique my curiosity.

I was in TRU yesterday, and while buying a game asked when they got in Wii's. The cashier (maybe manager, given her age) said they come in every 2 weeks and sell out right away. Last week they got 45, and there was a line at the door Sunday morning before they opened.

OK, the line outside the door suprised me, but I could accept it.

Then I asked about how the PS3 is doing. She said it wasn't doing well, and that almost 50% of the ones the sell are defective.

While I know the PS3 isn't selling at Wii levels, and we could quibble the qualifications for "doing well", the high level of defective merchandise just sounded wrong to me. I know the 360 has its issues, and I expect some with the PS3 too, but 50%? That sounds like bullshit to me.

    What are your thoughts?

the PS3 has no known defects.
I think she meant the 360, which has a pretty high failure rate.

Most definitely not true. The defective rate of the PS3 is no where near 50%. Let's use just a smidgeon of common sense on this one. If it was 50%, it would be the talk of the internet for the last 6 months.

Yeah, sounds like total BS. The PS3 seems to be pretty defect-free, which is good.

and shocking considered who made it.

I've never heard of a PS3 having any problems.

Meanwhile 360's crap out all the time, and Wiis had a ton of problems early on too.

Just out of curiousity, have there been any horror stories about PS3 relability so far? I recently bought a PS3, and it seems pretty rock solid, but after the horror stories of the PS2, I'm paranoid everytime it makes an odd noise.

Haven't heard of any issues/defects with the PS3 other than it won't play all the old ps1 or ps2 games. But thats nothing new, ps2 didnt read all the ps1 games and 360 doesnt read all the xbox games.

I have never seen a hardware launch that was not a victim of "they're all defective" rumors. I have heard similar stories about each of the three current consoles with little to back up any of them save for the 360. (Personal experience tells me some of the 360 rumors are true.)

Yeah, most of that sounds like BS. I mean, the part about Wiis selling out quickly and PS3's sticking around is probably true, even if her numbers and stories of lines forming are exaggerated. However, the part about PS3 reliability is bunk. I've heard of no widespread issues on them, and the only problems I've seen with PS3's are in those enclosed kiosks, where I've seen many locked up on the Motorstorm demo.

And let's not blow the 360 defects out of proportion either. They had some issues with launch units, but have actually been pretty good about making sure subsequently shipping 360's don't have the problem, and have also been pretty good about fixing those that do.

The fact MS has had to twice revise it's warranty coverage is all the confirmation I need.

In fairness, she never said how many people were waiting for the Wii. Could have been two or three. But given that I've never seen a Wii, ever, anywhere, I don't doubt that she sold out those 45 within a day.

As for the PS3 malfunctions, it could just be that my TRU has some inbred retards stocking the shelves who don't know that you have to handle a PS3 differently than a box of Lincoln Logs.

I post over at Playstation Underground a little. Most of the "Defective PS3" threads are quickly found to be posted by trolls trying to spread their X-box/Wii propaganda. I think people hate on it so they feel that they aren't missing anything by not putting up the cash. Once it gets established it will do better and have more obvious reasons to buy it.

I went with PS3 because I think Sony offers more quality 1st party titles than X-box. And exlusivity is starting to look like a thing of the past.
