I was thinking about the way Transformers were protrayed in the 1984 TV series, where their robot mode didn't change when they came to Earth, but they got new alt modes. I was wondering, with some good engineering, would this sell as a toy? A Triple Changer whose three modes were robot, Cybertronian mode and Earth mode. Of course you'd have to make sure the Cybertronian mode was distinct enough from the Earth mode to avoid being overly lame. I'd love to see this in a new Seeker mold - Say something like a Voyager size Starscream who could turn from robot to tetra-jet to Earth style jet, or a Megatron with an Earth helicopter mode and a Cybertron hovertank mode.

Personally I'd like some fully Cybertronian Triple Changers, so Hasbro wouldn't have the restictions of going by two existing vehicle modes.

While it's a nice idea I can see the designers cheaping out by having proper robot and Earth alt modes and then half-assing the Cybertron alt mode by it just being the Earth alt mode with a few panels opened out. Like a Stealth Force mode. Think RTS Tracks in flight mode - that'd probably be as good as the Cybertron mode would try to be.

It's a little sad that a good idea gets dismissed because we expect Hasbro to screw it up.

    This is an awesome idea.

but how would the aesthetic work in both alt modes? Panels? Add-ons?

How about applying it to beastformers. Dinobots that turn from robots, to Cybertronian tanks to dinosaurs for instance?

Scaleface I LOVE this idea. That would be so awesome to have the original g1 cast having their cybetronian and earth alt modes.

As for the engineering and the sales aspect i am not sure that it would do well. It would be awesome though.

I'm sure that there would be some fanboy not too far away to defend them.

As long as things are designed well and not just a yoga transformation then yeah I'd go for it. I'm thinking WFC-esque designs since they designed actual vehicles modes for them.

But the idea of something like the dinobots doing it is fantastic!

Neat concept but I bet that Hasbro and Takara would make the Cybertronian form just the Earth mode but mistransformed heavily with 2 or 3 panels out.

Triple changing is an awesome concept to me. The fun/amazement comes from seeing two recognizeable and realistic alt modes.

So, wouldn't that make the regular triple changers be quintiple changers?

There are some figures that can already pull this off with fan modes like ROTF Mindwipe and WFC Soundwave and others with "Stealth force" modes that look slightly like a cybertronian vehicle.

I understand you'd like official modes I'm just saying we're not that far off.
