Welp, I'm done with idw.
From what she's said on Twitter, I infer that she didn't really want to do it, and tried to write it as well as possible.
And let's be fair - of all the ways to go out, "sacrificing himself to save Ironhide's life" is a pretty dignified one.
To be fair, Kup had become a character that was just around. He didn’t really have much of a story arc going, IMO.
And I was left a little disappointed when there were no deaths in First Strike, when there was a promise of a high body count.
So, I guess, this has to pick up the slack.
Thus preventing that colorful picture on the cover.
Well IDW seems to have a thing for killing off characters who have toys coming out... But Titans Return Kup has been out for a while... POWER OF THE PRIMES KUP CONFIRMED!!!
Or more likely, again this is an attempt to try and get the Visionaries over and convinced readers tehy matter by killing off a recognizable Transformers character.
This might be the final straw for a lot of fans.
But in the bigger picture I can't help but feel the endgame is in sight for the idwverse. The gameboard is being cleared. Non essential characters are being taken out of the picture.
I have it on good authority that major stuff is on the way post Unicron and at some point there will be an official announcement
Can you elaborate on that?
Re: Kup dying, the editor's page makes it pretty clear to me that the idea of a shocking character death in Kup was more foisted on the writer. So I'm not going to give her flak for that.
The actual editorial page's subtext concerns me given it's kinda saying "WE'RE KILLING OFF CHARACTERS FOR GOOD NOW SO EDGY THAT IT'S THE GUY WHO ALWAYS MANAGED TO COME BACK". It's kinda tonedeaf. Especially when they GET TRAILBREAKER'S NAME WRONG THERE (if his name is wrong ANYWHERE the last place should be the letter by the editor).
I wonder if we will get to see Springer react to Kup's death seeing how much of a bond the two of them have shared in the IDW universe.
Further musings, if it's okay to kill big name characters like Kup that actually raises a question of whether or not they're planning to End things around when POTP ends as part of a brand shift.
Which intrigues me more than alarms me because being able to plan a story's end this far in advance is an interesting notion.
As much as I can. There are two major tf events happening in IDW in 2018. One is Unicron and the other is yet to be announced.
At some convention at some point this year IDW will make the announcement about what is ahead. I have no idea when or what it is but its big.
I'm largely against character death unless it's VITALLY necessary to a story. I'm definitely against it in some unimportant crossover that most of the main audience won't end up reading.
The fact that they had to justify it or put it over as important or whatever in an editorial at the end is pretty peculiar.
well that’s fucked kup
I can tell you now....
They know exactly how it will end.
God, the whole shared IDW universe thing is complete trash.
It simply hasn't worked.
Thoughts a few hours later. I’d say a solid read. Very “issue 1” but I’m definitely interested.
The Kup thing. Just doesn’t bother me. Characters are in the crosshairs these days. Peeps die. Sometimes they comeback sometimes they don’t. I think he’s well characterized so I don’t think he got neglected. The only thing is that weird ass memorial. Also people get way too personal in their criticism at times
You know there are a lot of characters in the tf universe who have never had much screen time in IDW so maybe its their turn to shine post Unicron.
If you were to ask my opinion I would say that its going to be something like 2012 where we had the Costa ongoing split into mtmte and rid. My feeling is the next phase in IDW continuity is on the way and a lot of characters deemed "surplus to requirements" are being killed off to make room for other characters. I could be wrong.
But something is looming on the horizon and it ain't Unicron.
I actually have less issues with the death and more issues with the memorial letter.
The letter is just weird. It feels very much like "we knew you would hate it, but it's actually good!"
You know something? I'm kinda glad Kup died.
Like, I love Kup. One of my favorite Transformers characters. Don't get me wrong.
But at this rate? With the way writing at IDW has been plummeting in quality with each passing issue, seemingly in service of rushing everything along to this Unicron event and a possible reboot? I don't mind my favorite characters dying. I'd rather have them die now than have them do something unbelievably stupid later because of bad writing.
