Really pissed that the digital copy does not transfer to Vudu. Stupid move by Shout if you ask me.

I'm not going to use this VHX for a single movie, what a waste.

The digital copy works on Apple TV, which really makes sense in a sea of Samsung and Magnavox sets...seriously, how many people actually have Apple TVs? Shame there's no digital purchase option on Amazon, since you can watch Amazon streaming from nearly any device.

Why are the blu-rays so hard to find in stores? Why didn't target and Wal-Mart get them? You could get the gijoe movie Blu-ray at all the stores when it came out. Wal-mart got the ranma half blu-rays but not transformers? I like ramna but other then anime fans how many folks know who ranma is? What is going on?

There's an old UK DVD release of the film which actually has the complete picture, (in a very bizarre aspect ratio, it has to be said), which purported to show all the 'cut-off' stuff from the top and sides of the picture:

    Good Day my fellow Bots!

With Transformer the Movie being released for the first time in the USA on Blu-ray. I was rather intrigued to see which version of the Blu-ray has the best quality. So with owning the Metrodome UK version released on October 5th 2007, last night I did a video and audio comparison of both versions of these Blu-rays. I was really curious to see if there were any differences between the two versions. Well to start off there is a big difference in the 2 version and I have added screen caps of the two versions. The captures are taken from a 1080p projection image.
First off the UK version is Feature Aspect Ratio 16:9 (1,78:1). The Shout Factory version is Feature Aspect Ratio Widescreen (1,85:1)/Full Frame (1,33:1).
So with the 3 different aspect ratios the UK version fits all the screen. Shout Factory version cuts off some of the bottom and top of the screen. So one of the biggest differences is the look of the 2 versions.
So here are the images. I added the Menu Screen to show what the difference is in the two versions.
    TF Blu-ray Shout Factory (1).jpg TF Blu-ray UK (1).jpg
The first Image is the Shout Factory and the second is Metrodome.
    TF Blu-ray Shout Factory (2).jpg TF Blu-ray UK (2).jpg
Shout Factory version is filtered with a white haze in a deep saturation of reds. The UK version is actually brighter and more brilliant.
    TF Blu-ray Shout Factory (3).jpg TF Blu-ray UK (3).jpg
You can definitely see the white haze on the Shout Factory.
    TF Blu-ray Shout Factory (4).jpg TF Blu-ray UK (4).jpg
    TF Blu-ray Shout Factory (6).jpg TF Blu-ray UK (6).jpg
Not sure why Hot Rod has a red chest.
    TF Blu-ray Shout Factory (7).jpg TF Blu-ray UK (7).jpg
Devastator is a bit washed out.
    TF Blu-ray Shout Factory (11).jpg TF Blu-ray UK (11).jpg
More vibrant blues from the Matrix of the UK version.
    TF Blu-ray Shout Factory (15).jpg TF Blu-ray UK (15).jpg
Starscream's death is whitewashed on the Shout Factory and deeper blacks on the UK. Plus if you look at the bottom of Starscream's chin it's a bit cut off but not to much.
    TF Blu-ray Shout Factory (16).jpg TF Blu-ray UK (16).jpg
The Shout Factory with the white wash and red filter giving the detail a bland look. The UK is crisper, clearer, and more vibrant colors in the details.
    TF Blu-ray Shout Factory (23).jpg TF Blu-ray UK (23).jpg
More of the red filtering on the Shout Factory version.

So I hope you all enjoy my images and my thoughts. You decide which seams to look the best. Not sure if this 4K transfer is all that great in my opinion but the UK seams to look better to me which was done almost a decade ago.

Oh and the audio on the Shout Factory is not as clear, crisp, and has minimal bass rumble which the Metrodome version is more prevalent.
I am going to add a few more images in my next post.
    Enjoy!!!

Yeah, same experience here. Which is odd considering that everything else looked really well done.

I watched it widescreen. That is my preferred option and since this was made with the intent of being seeing on the big screen like that, that is what I view to be the correct choice.

Why would you not be able to watch your digital copy on any device you want to? It's your copy, is it not?

Yeah I just gave BBTS a total of $300.00 in the last 2 weeks (a couple 3P add-on's and a few Takara figures/sets) so I'll have to wait till the weekend for both Civil War and TF Remastered.

I started a thread a while back concerning the crop and other questions regarding this release. Read starting from here for detailed info regarding how the movie was cropped:

Questions about the Shout Factory TFTM 86 BluRay / DVD

The next post after the link has a link to the home theater forum where there is even more extensive discussion along with examples of the full images used to create both the 4:3 and widescreen versions.

Thanks for these. I'd love to see someone do direct device capture side-by-sides with between the two blu-ray versions at some point. That crushing over-saturated red is odd, especially on Hot Rod's chest.

Cool! I will take a closer look at these but first question, is your projector calibrated? Thanks!

read a few pages back, most best buys didn't even get the regular version of the blu-ray and only 2 - 3 steel book copies. I didn't want to pay $27 for the steel book but i'm happy i got one now.

Good question. The Shout! Factory version doesn't look nearly so saturated on my TV.

Thanks! And I'll ask the same of whatever you are watching on;)

Speaking of which, for people discussing anything picture (or sound) quality related, can we also get model numbers on whatever devices you guys are using and any other relevant details because these things make a huge difference in the image you see or sound you hear.

I could not find the Blu ray anywhere. Wal-Mart had the DVD and none of the other stores I called had the Blu ray, nor could they order it.

The best thing would be to get a direct capture from the video stream instead of snapping pictures of our displays. I'd do it, but I'm at work and can't get to my discs or PC right now.
