IDW was selling a nifty advance copy of this issue at Botcon that included all three covers the issue will have at retail, plus a bonus fourth Botcon exclusive cover, for $5. Basically you get all four covers stapled one on top of the other, so it's like you get several extra pages of art and you get the issue early for an extra buck (you also end up with four ads for the TFTM DVD at the end, but whatever, it's still cool).

Unfortunately, for me, the cool ends with the clever packaging of the covers. This issue was a big disappointment for me. The story is kind of lacking. It involves Nightbeat working on solving a murder, sort of. Except that then it derails into Nightbeat fighting some Micromasters (I think) and then getting captured. They do some experiment on him and implant something in his brain (I think) and then he blacks out. The last couple of pages are him answering a transmission from Optimus Prime to rendevouz with Ark-32 heading towards Earth and a cliffhanger ending that left me scratching my head trying to figure out why it's supposed to be suspenseful. If anyone who got the issue can explain it to me, please do, because I'm honestly clueless. Even reading the book a second time didn't help.

The art is teeeerrrible. It looks more like quick sketches than final art. Optimus Prime looks like a fish on page 21, and on page 22 he looks even worse. The colors do a good job of salvaging what is there though, so props to the colorist for that.

Still, big step backwards from the Shockwave spotlight.

You won't be able to miss it, I promise.

I forgot to mention there was like a 6 or 7 page preview of the movie comic in the issue. They also had the full first issue of the movie adaptation at the show for people to look through. It's about what you would expect. Budiansky sticks VERY close to the original script, just tweaking a few lines here and there, and Don's art is great.

Well, I'm excited about the movie comic, but...that Nightbeat story sounds pretty blech. Nick Roche doing the art doesn't stir my interest any, either. Maybe I'll just flip through this one at the store, too.

Maybe headmasters will be micromasters instead of people.

    Hope so.

Mark Bright. The guy who did the Shockwave cover on US #5. Nick's just doing a cover.

Oh. Wow. I didn't know that, and it makes the quality all the more disappointing.

My main objection to the art is that Nightbeat's appearance kept changing. There was no consistancy to his look.

The whole issue might be a good set up for later in the run, but as a stand alone it doesn't work as a single issue like the Shockwave did.

Simon says that this could eventually involve Galvatron (which won't be Megatron this time around).

Nope, Simon says he's going for the human/robot partnering in his panel on Sunday.

Nightbeat's Spotlight was great until the last bit.

His changing physical appearance was very jarring to me, but after a minute I realized he'd done the whole "reformat to blend in on this planet" bit.

However, I found the ending lacking. It was creepyish, but for a one-shot it tried to hard to be part of a mini. :/

Very, -very- nice job with the multicovers on the Botcon release, though.

Maybe whatever they did to his head is what causes the headmaster process to be necisary.

I honestly can't fathom how anyone could be dissapointed with this issue. Although I agree that the art was rather sub-par, I thought this was the single best TF comic issue I've read. Ever. It's paced so well, there's some really good "makes ya think" dialogue in it, and I can't WAIT to see how the ending pans out. A must-read!

The art killed it for me also. I mean, really killed it.

The story I could accept (maybe) if it wasn't a one-shot. Simon stated at his panels that these would all connect to a larger, 3-4 year story arc he has planned out, but I still need more closure from a spotlight issue.

And yeah, I didn't get the Micromasters or whatever they were either

Can you pros tell me how many issues of spotlight have been released? I just bought the 1st issue today with Shockwave on the cover.

    Thanks, it's my first post.
