Just from what I've seen on the "big sites", most critics are hating on the movie because the director is Michael Bay. One review even spent most of the time ripping on Michael Bay as a director and hardly touching the movie.

But here's some links -- add your own links to various movie reviews:

    - Rotten Tomatoes (Critics 61%, Users 85%)
    - CNN.COM (Review says movie is dull, Michael Bay sucks)
    - Roger Ebert (3 out of 4, ending battle too long or would have gotten 4 out of 4, Michael Bay did good)
    - DenverPost (Great summer flick, mind blowing action)
    - Rocky Mountain News (Movie ok, not for everyone, too loud and in your face)

Here's part (couldn't type the whole thing) of a review in the latest issue of STARBURST, a long running and respected UK science fiction magazine (it's been running for 30 years!). This review isn't online so I can't link to it for 'proof', but is featured in the new issue (#352).

    "THE VERDICT
Time to redefine the words Epic, Loud and Product Placement.
Director Micheal Bay's testosterone-fuelled fantasy action adventure puts Hasbro's ever-popular toy franchise centre stage in a super-scale extravaganza. The Autobot mythology might be all over the place despite the entrance of Optimus Prime and Bumblebee generating cheers. And the human story is painted in the purest of of cartoon broad-strokes. But the 'wow' factor and turbo-charged thrills are never less than astonishing in another of Bay's over-long and ostentatious offerings.

With the plot a robotic replay of (executive producer) Steven Speilberg's E.T. with grafted on elements from King Kong, The Black Scorpion and Godzilla, it's up to the hybrid cast to ring the changes of familiarity. This year's fastest rising superstar Shia LaBeouf does exactly what he did in Disturbia. He cuts an original hero from the oldest of The Island screen-writing duo's cloth so you engage with his plight and the humourous way he can only deal with it.

John Turturro, playing sinister Sector 7 Agent Simmons, is the clear touchstone to the concept's cartoon origins. Saying his performance is way over-the-top does disservice to his character's importance in making sure subtlety never intrudes on the high-octane Science Fiction ingredients the later parts ramp up to super-sized fun levels. Transformers isn't perfect - The pace sometimes flags and Rachael Taylor is laugable as an Australian cyber-geek - but it remains never less than impressive in all key entertainment areas despite that."

Reviewer Alan Jones is a highly respected film critic & writer and I personally rate his opinions very highly. This is one review I was anticipating nervously as he doesn't usually buy into Hollywood 'excess for the sake of it' (He didn't like ARMAGEDDON for example) so it's nice to see him rate TF so well - He goes on to give the movie 4 out 5 and finishes by saying it's the "most innovative blockbuster of the summer".
