Hasbro was kind enough to allow us to ask a question to the creators of the Transformers Prime series a bit ago, and today they sent back their response. Our question was, thanks to input from you guys...

2 main characters have non-speaking communication methods. Bumblebee who communicates with Raf, and Soundwave who repeats things back. What was the creative process which lead to that; could these elements change in future episodes?

Quite a nice little insight into the decision-making processes behind Prime. Seems they're putting a lot of thought & effort into it, which can only be a good thing. :)  Also, further confirmation that this is set in continuity with 'Exodus'.

Nice to have an explanation for Bee's and Soundwave's lack of "voices". Maybe they'll let Ratchet work on Bee tho..they're right..it adds to the "creepy factor" that Soundwave records and plays back who and what he hears, without using "his" own voice..yet. Got a kick out the the comment..Starscream-the Decepticon that won't shut up!! :lol  Thanks for the update.

I noticed Soundwave's subtle modulation effect when he played back Megatron's orders to Starscream. There was a bit of "musical" fuzz to it.

I like the effect though, it really does give Soundwave this eerie, ghostly presence. Especially when coupled with how he just effortlessly glides around.

I see where they're coming from with 'Bee, as the movie version is the in-your-face one right now - I just don't like it, personally.

Soundwave...yeah it's kinda creepy. You just wonder what's going on behind that faceplate.

I still kind of want to know exactly how it is Raf can understand Bee. But maybe that'll get addressed in season 2 like they were hinting at in that other QnA.

I hope its not one of those "he is one with nature(or in this case, circuitry)" type of thing that's oh-so-common in anime.

I hope they do a flashback to how he lost his voice in the battle. (in the leaked section of the book, that was later cut from it, Megatron grabbed him by the throat and crushed it)

Hoping to see Jetfire in the show so that he and Starscream would have an intense air battle!! Remember that falling out between the two on "War For Cybertron"?

That is an awesome take on Soundwave... I am now waiting to see more of him in the next episodes.

man... i get it, but i just don't reallly like this reasoning behind Bumblebee. It kind of sums up why I enjoy Prime but can't be excited about it. It feels too... considered. Like it can't be it's own thing. I loved animated for doing its own thing in spite of the movies, as if it gave us a rounded off transformers experience. It just seems that with Prime there is nothing for me to really love/hate. just well written stories with bland, corporate driven character templates behind them. It's intensely confusing.

I'm most baffled by how the creator even knows of Exodus yet has a series that cannot fit with in it.

I love this version of Soundwave. I'm glad they went that direction with him. Makes him a little spooky.
