    Achievement in Visual Effects
Contending against "The Golden Compass" and "Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End"

    Achievement in Sound Editing
Contending against "The Bourne Ultimatum," "No Country for Old Men," "Ratatouille," and "There Will Be Blood."

    Achievement in Sound Mixing
Contending against "The Bourne Ultimatum," "No Country for Old Men," "Ratatouille," and "3:10 to Yuma."

I'd say Transformers is a shoo-in for Visual Effects.

Was just about to post this myself

Would certainly love to see it win for SFX

Would mean another DVD release for sure - "Winner of XX Oscar(s)" all over it

For visual effects, the only real threat to TF (IMHO) is the Pirates. The amount of work that went into the whirlpool scene was immense, and the sequence was (visually) incredible, but the rest of the movie was nothing innovative. There was nothing that we hadn't seen before in Pirates II.

I wouldn't put it past voters to give the Oscars to one of the other movies. Nothing's in the bag even though TF was visually remarkable.

I would've loved to see a nominations for best score and bet original song. But you can't have it all

You would hope, but I think these things are rigged.

Cool to see some recognition though, the visual and sounds effects were brilliant.

I hope TF does win at least the visual effects award. When they announced the oscar nominees on a Kid's news show over here, they never mtnioned TF's.
They did however say "You'll all be glad to hear Harry Potter is looking like the favourite". I almost threw up a bit. I'm glad to see HP got booted out of the visual effects category.

Sound mixing it might have a chance, I thought Pirates would clean up with sound though, but they arent even in the running.

I'm sure pirates will win for visual effects. Transformers contains the best CG ever put to film, but pirates was more popular.

True, that's my fear: that the judges will be biased against Transformers like so many critics were. That they'll be judging the movie as a whole rather than what it was nominated for. It'd be a travesty if Transformers didn't win, though, because they do have the most complex visual effects ever created in a movie. Maybe they should give the judges a copy of the bonus features disk, have them look over all the work put into the visuals. Plus, Transformers did outgross Pirates, and Transformers toys outsold Pirates toys, so I think that makes Transformers more popular than Pirates anyway.
It's all up to the judges though, and hopefully they won't let bias against a "Feature Length Action Figure Commercial Directed By the Evil Michael Bay" get in the way.
