Translating Variety's Hollywood-ese writing, Transformers has made it from a field of 15 contenders to the final "bakeoff" of seven films that on Jan. 16 will name the three nominees for the Oscar.

Nice. Only 300 stands a chance against Transformers. I think the odds favor the latter.

Out of the choices, I'd like to see TF get the Oscar. Spidey 3 was pretty standard stuff, basically the same as Spidey 2. I am Legend was so obviously CGI that it doesn't deserve the statue. I will say that the Bourne Ultimatum was good because I didn't notice most of the CGI in the film. (and after all isn't that what makes TRULY great visual effects? I mean the stuff that's there that's just so well-blended in that it's not noticeable?) The only other film I'd say had truly great, somewhat-innovative FX was 300. Although the all-blue-screen technique had been done before with Sin City (among others,) it still looked great for this film.

The animated films are the really interesting ones, to me. I don't feel that they should be held in the same category as live-action movies. The entire film was created as a special effect. They have an Oscar for animated films, which one of these should win, but can we say that an animated film had the same "Achievement in Visual Effects" as a movie where a live-action actor interacts seamlessly with something created artificially?

I say TF as a TFan, TF even as a movie watcher. The TFs seems so real and I guess it was harder to do since it was mechanical, not fantasy, and had to actually follow rules

How in the name of hell did Evan Almighty manage to get into the "bakeoff"?

Transformers is really the only film this year that showed a huge leap in visual fx technology. Everything else was just standard and cranked out background filler.
And I would really like to see the 15 minute clip for Transformers.

Sorry, forgot to claim it. Probably why I always wound up in left field in recess kickball games. :lol
I'd refer you to someone who saw it, but I don't know anyone who bothered.

I did only via torrent *L* I'd say its cause of the flood scene at the end.

Well lets hope they get the little gold man for that because they sure aren't going to bring one home for writing or directing.

I'd say Transformers chances are fairly high for the win but not a given. At least they remain consistant unlike Spiderman 3 that had a great scene with becoming Sandman but seemed to slack off as the film went on. The big battle at the end was as bad visually as shakey cam.

    *sheepishly raises hand*

I only saw it because Bruce Almighty is one of my favorite movies, and I thought Evan Almighty would be just as good. That said the CGI flood scene was probably the best part of the movie, and that was at the end of the flick.

I didn't see the movie but from the trailer the CGI for that flood scene looked pretty bad. And Transformers should in there for Best Original Score. The music for teh movie is beautiful.

Clearly your blind then. Transformers has some of the most sophistated and realistic CGI designs ever seen before. Yes, there's been endless debate regarding the battles but this is about the entire film, not just the battles.

Chances are they'll show the Autobots arrival on earth, the Bonecrusher/Prime fight and perhaps part of the mid-town battle as the 15 minutes of footage.

I'm guessing the final three will be Transformers, Pirates and... err... 300?

if I were doing the reel, I'd be certain to include blackout transforming at the beginning of the film, that scene made millions of jaws simultaneously hit the floor.

    Blackout for still transformation
    Bonecrusher/Prime for moving transformation
    Autobots Arrival/Final scenes (Group CGI)

I dont think they will limit themselves to straight full scenes though

I agree TFs is almost a sure winner for Visual Effects award. That was amazing to watch them transform. But I'd also like to see them nominated and win best Sound too...

I can say without bias that ILM did some of the most realistic CGI work they've ever pumped out on Transfarmors so yeah, hope they get the nod, but I won't kill myself if not, ultimately it doesn't mean TOOOOO much

That's more the fault of directing and choreography than the visual effects team
