Too bad that is the only thing worthwhile in the movies.

    Got this from superherohype.com

ComingSoon.net reports that Captain America: The First Avenger, Transformers: Dark of the Moon and X-Men: First Class are still in the race for the Visual Effects Oscar. They are facing Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2, Hugo, Mission: Impossible - Ghost Protocol, Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides, Real Steel, Rise of the Planet of the Apes and The Tree of Life.

All members of the Visual Effects Branch will be invited to view 10-minute excerpts from each of the 10 shortlisted films on Thursday, January 19. Following the screenings, the members will vote to nominate five films for final Oscar consideration.

The 84th Academy Awards nominations will be announced live on Tuesday, January 24, at 5:30 a.m. PT in the Academy's Samuel Goldwyn Theater.

Academy Awards for outstanding film achievements of 2011 will be presented on Sunday, February 26, at the Kodak Theatre at Hollywood & Highland CenterĀ®, and televised live by the ABC Television Network. The Oscar presentation also will be televised live in more than 225 countries worldwide.

If only Andy Serkis did performance capture for the freakier Decepticons, then it would be a VFX slam-dunk. ;)

IMO all three TF movies should have won the award, but I'm afraid this year it will go to "Planet of the Apes." IMO the TF fx were much better, but I can see PotA winning because it was a more critically acclaimed movie...

And the CGI was far superior to anything that has come out this year.

If you like these movies or not, they do have some of, if not the best CGI. I'm a VERY observant person, I notice everything! Other then seening mistakes in films the first time I watch them, I do love it when I can watch a movie and think, "wow, that looks very real!" instead of, "eh, the CGI was aright..." DOTM should win! It should also win best sound!

I still can't believe Transformers lost to The Golden Compass. Two scenes from the first Transformers movie that looked so real, Bonecrusher tackling OP on the freeway. Second, at the end when OP is on the ground and demands Sam to put the cube in his chest, just before Sam shoves it into Megatron's chest.

The movie should make the short list since it has the technical merits to easily make it to the short list. The only problem after that is that the Oscars seem to be driven more by Hollywood politics than merit so with talks of a Transformers 4 I kind of worry that would be the excuse to give the award to some other film.

An award or not the effects team from physical effect to digital effects still did an outstanding job on the film.

As much as I want DotM to win, RotPotA deserves it more. But hey, 99% chance that DotM will be in the final five. :)

These awards are pretty ******ed. So which 5 movies had better special effects than the ROTF Devastator & Ravage scenes?

    whatever lol

I disagree. I didn't think the CGI animals in PotA were that realistic. If one of them was standing next to a real animal of the same type, I think it would have been easy to tell which one was CGI and which one wasn't.

Two years ago ROTF nominated for another award for sound mixing.
I probably would be surprised if DOTM will win it (God, help!)... Then perhaps the world is really changed!

The award really isn't for how real you made the effects look but what you were able to pull off that advances the industry in some way.

Thus Planet of the Apes has a strong shot at the award for advancing the way an actors facial expressions can be transferred onto an a CGI non-human character. Academy voters seems to love emotion and Caesar was able to show emotions in a way that the Transformers couldn't. Plus Andy Serkis has become the king of motion capture so that hedges the bet for an Apes win.

Cool to hear that (whether or not DotM makes it to the final five or wins the award) this Transformers movie has at least been noted quite well for its visual effects. : D

Those old coots that run the Academy will never let a film like DOTM win anything, even (especially) if it's well deserved. Remember, it's not based on popular demand, voting or belief... it's a bunch of crusty old curmugeons that live in castles who hate sci-fi.
