Transformers debut at number 2 at the UK box office taking £8.6 million, that's just over $17 million dollars. This is on top of the previously reported £3 million ($6 million) during the preview weekend.

Also, because of this and the other international takings, Transformers has now passed the $500 million gross mark, Box Office Mojo will probably reflect this sometime towards the end of the week as they are some way behind the true international figures.

Paramount Pictures UK are very pleased with how Transformers opened last weekend, especially since it beat Harry Potter into third place (it was expected that Transformers would open in third place). They still expect it to go on and out-gross The Simpsons by the end of its run.

I'll keep everyone up-to-date with news from Paramount Pictures UK, as we hear first though our contacts there.

No wonder you guys in the UK can't get any decent figures over there, you let the Simpsons beat out TF's for the top spot in it's opening week!

Even though you are kidding, I think you're right. Our precious (and pretentious) media darlings just adore the cutting satire of THE SIMPSONS don't you know, and most of we Brits think we're smarter & more sophisticated than we actually are and fall over ourselves to try and show it. This result was inevitable.

Thing is, i believe that the movie toys help with film ticket sales, and i for one am having a hard time finding anywhere in my town that sells them, and most of the bus shelter posters have been swiped or vandalised ( no, not by Bart ), and the tv spots have all but dried up. We wuz robbed over here!

I'm not surprised the Simpons came in first. You think it's popular in America? Try visiting Britain sometime. The merchandising blitz of the early 90's? It never ended over there, and here's my proof:

Really, NOTHING could have beaten the Simpsons in the UK. It's impossible.

Agreed - there seems to have been much more publicity here for the Simpsons than Transformers.

it opens in Japan on August 4th and in a somewhat limited release ( they call it roadshow )

so with Japan being the 2nd largest movie going audience out there, only falling behind THe USA I expect this movie to top 650 million in about 10 days time from now at the least !

Actually that depends on the film. Half the time, the UK is 2nd.

    previews?

Do these figures include previews? If not then there's probably a huge difference; Simpsons only had previews the day before official release which means a few adults in the showings after work and kids during the day. Transformers had previews the entire previous weekend, our cinema alone had 26 preview showings and many of the TF fans woud have been at one of them rather than wait the extra week.

The Simpsons reviews over here were heavily influenced by the "Rupert Murdock" syndrome. For instance, The time gave Transformers a 1 star rating, The Simpsons 4 star. Its a Murdock owned paper. Apparently several reviews were written for the Times, most were positive about Transformers, but due to instructions to "hype up the Simpsons over everything else" they ran the most negative one.

Transformers when you take into account the previews, transformers grossed about $22 million within the UK over its first 5 days compared to The Simpsons $26 million, so things are much closer and would have been even more so if the advance previews for TF were more widespread.

The stars at the VIP screening last week certainly seemed to enjoy the film

I'm just waiting for the impending "$500 million means nothing" post and that "Bayformers was a complete failure".

Saw it 3 times here -probably one more time coming, too.

TF will catch up, judging by the queues there were for it when I went to see it last.
