Anyone notice that when the are in vehicle mode, they are spotless, but in robot mode, you see battle marks.

It's because all the car companies want their product placement to look nice. That's why Mirage was never in stealth force mode... or named Mirage.

The first movie showed several examples of TFs creating holograms: the Decepticon holodrivers, and the ones Optimus projected from his eyes. It's not hard to believe they could create holograms to simulate a damage-free alt-mode to help themselves blend in.

Long story short: clean robots don't look real.

They dirty-up the robots because when they're all clean and shiney they look really fake because of how spotless and reflective they are.

And the scars are cool, IMHO. It adds character, from the chipped paint on Optimus, to the severe optical damage on Ironhide.

Makes you think about them afterwards, leaves an impression. What happened to Ironhide's face, anyway?

Ive always thought that the transformation scrapes them up pretty bad cause its all metal sliding on metal, and then somehow it all gets cleaned up when they transform back? maybe like a hologram or some alien scuff-remover

Didn't they say something that the Transformers are self regenerating biological metal, which means they heal? Like us, we get bruises sometimes, but then we do get outright scars from serious wounds.

Ironhide never bites off more than he can chew. He's f**king Ironhide!

But that is one of the details that I love the most about the entire trilogy. Really shows that Ironhide has been through a lot in his lifetime.

What would him being named "Mirage" have to do with how good he looks in vehicle mode?

Ironhide had that damage to his face since he was introduced in the first film, which doesn't make much sense because he had no such damage in his protoform.
