That was my reaction too. It really had that '80s Spielberg warmth to it. The shop keeper made me think of Gremlins, like he's the kind of guy who knows more than he lets on, and gives Bumblebee away because he knows this gift will take the kid he's giving it to on an adventure.

 

Having the first live-action fembot with an actual character development be one of the bad guys? AND voiced by Angela Bassett?

I'm also actually crying tears now that I've seen heavy G1-designed Shockwave, Soundwave, and DEM TRIPLE CHANGER TRANSFORMATIONS. I was actually expecting more of a blend between Bayverse design and G1 with heavy leaning towards G1 for realism's sake (like, where all dem vehicle parts move to???) but I'm not complaining   Can't wait to see more Decepticons from this new aesthetic!

 

Want more of that and less of the being on earth garbage tbh. And again, what is wrong with them not giving Bee a voice? Thats getting old now.

 

Fuck me that was good, I love the way shatter and Dropkick use their tripple changing abilities and OMG i think Shatter maybe one of my favorite Decepticon next to Nitro Zeus.

 

Ok a compromise can be achieved... keep the G1-esque designs, but turn Bee back into the Camaro pls

I hope I'm wrong and even if I'm not it wouldn't bother me personally, but I have a feeling that what we think is Starscream is really Blitzwing again but in a flashback on Cybertron. I say that because I think the red deception car on the far left that we only partially see might be Shatter.

I don't know, maybe I'm over thinking it, but that said that DEFINITELY Shockwave, and that's definitely Skywarp on the far right and possibly Acid Storm in the back but he's now a conehead?

This moment kinda sold me on the film more than any of the actual bigger reveals like Shockwave. Shows that Knight and team aren't only focused on making the bots look good, but also strive for a more emotionally resonant story.

 

oh my god I can't believe how much MORE the Chinese market got.

Admittedly they kinda needed to show more to convince people why they should go see the movie given G1 fanwank won't sell it.

So much G1 meets live action love it's killing me in the best way. Ditto on that opening sequence, hopefully, the Iron Giant vibes pay off.
Having Optimus appear among those redwoods, great sense of size and there's got to be something said about those trees. Among the oldest living things on Earth meeting something far older and not of this Earth.

My new aesthetic is Bee trying to smoosh his way through the dog door, dude it's nearly impossible. Speaking from personal experience when I was a little kid. My scrawny ass *just* fit thought a medium sized one. My mom locked us out of the house, opened the garage door and proceeded to ooze through the dog door.

 

Yep, I'll be joining the minority here and agree that, as an almost direct G1 translation, those versions of Soundwave and Shockwave look really bland and disproportionate compared to other characters in the film. We've had great-looking modernizations of Soundwave (Cybertron, Animated, Robots in Disguise) and Shockwave (Energon, Animated, FoC, Prime) over the years which all cleverly took the original character basis while adding their own quirks and design cues, why can't this film do the same and come up with a more original rendition? I can understand why some folks might not like their older Bayverse versions, they did look like generic unrecognizable edgy aliens, but all the previously cited examples show there's a pretty good middle ground between bizarre metallic shrapnel blobs and basically just a Sunbow model modernized with more greebling. Oh well, gotta cash into 1980s nostalgia as hard as you can, amirite?

With that said though, the rest of the film looks great! Let's hope the writing is as on point as the visuals.

Travis sure knows what he's doing, but this makes me wonder how is this a prequel if all other bot looks a hell alot of different than how they look in bay movies.. But hey, I'm not questioning. Im just glad finally seeing a G1 optimus, shockwave, soundwave *and maybe starscream* on the big screen!
