    Yeah, but keep in mind that the Marvel comic and the toyline started several months before the cartoon.

    yeah, my parents got married exactly two days before the first episode of g1 aired according to the 17th date (i swore it was the 21st, oh well)

    Dude, Transformers was strong before the movies. The movies just turned a massively popular brand into an EXTREMELY POPULAR one.

    There was a 23 year gap between 1984 and the first movie... so... what would you say was keeping the franchise afloat in the meantime, exactly?

    May 8th is when the first issue of the Marvel Comic was released. While the Cartoon might be more recognizable to the casual public, it doesn't change the fact that comic came first (and was also advertised first). There's no real way to gauge what day the toys were first released, so the comic is our best indicator of "when the franchise began."
