There is no 'L' sound in Japanese, so when saying a word with an 'L' sound in it (like Lockdown) they use an 'R' sound.

I find it funny that people are making such a deal out of this (on either the "LAWL!" side or those who seem to view it all very literally). Has no-one seen the racially-insensitive jokes from over the past fifty-plus years? :)

I repeat it here: The only notable name change for Japanese Animated toys is Bulkhead becoming "Ironhide". Everyone else is named the same, it's just that BBTS got some really badly romanized names. Jetfire is still named "Jetfire" in Japan, not "Jetfighter", Lugnut is NOT remaned "Ragknights", Shockwave doesn't become "Showwave", and "Dargi", "Archi" and "Sunaru" are just a case of a severe lack of imagination on behalf of the Babelfish translator.

Think someone rendering Optimus Prime's Japanese name as "Optimas Puraim".

it's not even the first time the whole phonetics snafu has happened in this line (albeit just from some shoddy speech recognition software, and employing YTS kids to check the text)

you'd think fans of a dual jap/us toyline would be familiar with the vagaries of translation by now.

then again, chugway is a brilliant name. my jap shockwave will be my chugway.

I just find it funny that they bothered to change his official name because of it. Either way it would still be pronounced with an 'R'.

It is all just a case of bad romanization. Lockdown's name in Japanese would be "Rakudaon", written in "katakana", the script used for writing names or words borrowed from English. The R was not made back into L.

Probably something closer to Rakunato. I don't really know nuances of Katakana, so it's probably off by quite a bit.

You may wish to check out this table of Katakana. It'll help you understand this sort of thing, a little more.
