$18 million? Sure they got pretty banged up but that's a LOT of money. Not many would earn that much in their lifetime, even if there are additional costs due to their injury....

Sounds to me like she's permanently disabled. And she is (was?) only 26, no less. That being the case, she might have long-term medical and care costs to think about.

It's the studios responsibility, and they ponied up. I'm all for that. Hopefully it'll be enough to get her through what could potentially be a very tough life ahead.

wow, that's a kind of happy ending to a very sad situation. I wish her the best, because even with all that money, her life is bound to be pretty hard.

Hope that that actually covers her bills...medical care is a bitch, and for all we know she'll need it lifelong. This sounds entirely appropriate.

Unfortunately, in cases like these, the lawyers are the ones who make big bucks. Lawyers will take 40-60%. Plus whatever costs were incurred like expert witnesses, investigators etc. Then factor in taxes and a lifetime of medical costs...

Unless your legal system is a complete lawless free for all, no, lawyers will not and cannot take 40-60% of a settlement. Not even close, in fact.

Holy crap, wow. Considering her injuries she definitely deserved the money, but wow. Makes you have a little hope for the court system after all. :)

At least in personal injury and workers comp. It's 33%, but it may vary from lawyer to lawyer, but being that is the kind of law my father and uncle practice, they try to stay competitive in the field.

Wow. That settlement is well deserved, it seems. Hopefully she and her family can make that money last to cover her medical costs, pain, and suffering. Healthcare ain't cheap by a long shot.

It was $18.5M and I don't think that is near what she should have gotten. She has permanent brain damage and disfigurement. This was DreamWorks and Paramount settling out of court. I bet if she would have taken them to court she could have gotten triple that. As I said when it happened, Bay was reckless for something like this even being a possibility of happening.
