So as I went rummaging through some old IDW Transformers comics at my local shop, I discovered a spotlight issue on Springe......errr Drift?! I looked the cover and instantly thought I must have missed an issue about Springer, as I see a white version of him. But it says his name is Drift. I instantly picked it up and I am eager to read it. As I was flipping through it, Springer is actually in the book. So can anyone give me some background info. on Drift? Why might he look like Springer? Does he appear anywhere else?

I don't really think he looks that much like Springer personally.

And I don't get all the hate either...I actually enjoy the character. Can't wait for the geneations toy.

Who is fandom? Oh, once you figure it out...

And how can you say he looks like Springer? The only thing the two really have in common is a somewhat elongated forhead crest, and even then Drift has a large pentagon-like inset right in the middle while Springer does not have anything like that.

I really don't get all the hatred of Drift. As far as I can see, he hasn't really done much and he's not shoved down our throats storywise. I'm not too hot on him, but I eagerly await his toy.

Drift is hated because he's hack writer Shane McCarthy's "Japanesey" mary-sue fancharacter who's an ex-decepticon with THREE swords(one of which he can only use when it's "the right time") who can cut someone in half so fast you don't even see it. He was marketed as "the Wolverine of Transformers" and put in a limited cast of autobots for a children's book. Not only that, he's getting a classics toy before countless other deserving characters and his own mini-series.

He isn't a "character". He's a bunch of tropes thrown together.

I heard about that but never understood it.
Shortpacked! webcomic by David Willis -- Toys Are Serious Business

Drift seems like an intresting character, the idea of a Decepticon chaning sides, not just as a spy but haniong a real change of heart and becomine an Autobot.
Plus the figure looks good and is a deffinate pick up for me.

I don't see a Springer resemblace, he reminds me more of Patrol Labors from the anime series Mobile Police Patlabor

So that's why Drift became popular recently. "People who don't like things are dumb so let's troll them cause the fiction doesn't matter lololol."

I don't care how it's portrayed, I feel the same frustration over Drift as the guy in the comic.

I could've liked Drift had he not been introduced with the fanfare that he was, along with a spotlight and a first wave Generations toy. Had there been some anticipation, had interest in Drift and who he was been allowed to grow and be a mystery, then he could've been an interesting character that a good chunk of the fandom could've really liked, even debated over which Decepticon he once was. They could've played it up and had a lot of fun with him.

Instead he was presented in a way that made The Poochie - Television Tropes & Idioms introduction seem subtle.

To be honest I haven't been keeping up with the comic books so I'm looking forward to the figure myself.

Yea there is a really long list of characters I'd rather see done in the Classics/Universe/Generations line first, but I've just got a strange feeling that maybe Hasbro is holding back the big names for Bot Con. Retailers only care if he looks cool enough for kids and people like me to buy him, but fans well we love our nods to classic characters so I could why Drift was the poster boy for the Generations line at Toy Fair.
