A thought occurred to me today.
What is the transformation sound? You all know what I'm talking about; the classic 'Kr kr chi chi ching' (Yes I tried to spell out the sound fonetikally) ((Yes I even spelled phonetically, phonetically))

Anyway, back to my point; does anyone know what the sound was originally made from?

I always assumed it was synthesizer manipulation of sorts.

Maybe it's the parts moving? Maybe?

^This. I always thought that was the explanation, the parts moving into its places and such.

I think the original poster is asking from a sound design/production standpoint as in "What did the creators of the show use or do to make that sound?" I vaguely recall an interview that was posted around the time of Animated premiering where that show's sound designer briefly talked about getting the G1 transformation sound from Hasbro. He might have said something about the history of it, but I don't remember the particulars.

EDIT: found the interview, but he only mentions getting the sound and using variations of it in TF:A. Still a cool interview for anybody interested in this sort of thing

It scares the hell out of people on the train when it goes off. Trust me. I have it on my BlackBerry and it made a woman start looking up and down the isle as though she was afraid one was about to attack a la Frenzy on Air Force One.

I had it on my old phone, then I got mad and threw the phone and broke it. It is the only thing I miss from that phone. To hell with the picture. I miss the transformation sound.

Thanks for the links guys... but it doesn't answer the question. Unless I misunderstood the OP's question.

I've been searching but it looks like unless you ask the original creators HOW they made that noise, I guess we'll never know. My bet is it's synthed through the computer. It's fairly easy to make the noise with your own vocals, just slap a synth on it and you could probably replicate the noise. Frank Welker's amazing at making noises, so he could be a candidate for originating the noise. x_^ Just a thought.

    Now thats awsome!
as for the question, I was thinking of asking this too, you beat me.

also I noticed that the sound changes from the begaining of season 1 to the rest of the show it got faster and more high pitched.

Word! I was kind of thinking that maybe it was Frank Welker coughing through a vocoder or something.

It comes from a Devo song, which one I don't remember. Anyways, you hear the noise during the song, only it's backwards from how it was used in G1.

edit- Just looked it up, the song is called Auto Mowdown
