Since I first saw TR Hot Rod's car mode I was convinced we'd get a straight Repaint with a new head in the line's later waves or one of the box sets, and even more certain when I got him in-hand and the moulded canopy details were clearly Pointblank's!

Fast forward to SDCC, the Box Sets are dead in the water, and Slugslinger being the only new character in Wave 6 puts the kibosh on that notion, and yet it just so happens a trusted UK Etailer has some remaining Wave 3 Deluxes on discount, just when I'm looking the nab a Clone Twinpack off them...

    I pretty much had to.

I'd been considering customising a Crosshairs from Kup using a synthetic fabric dye already, and as Roddy's thighs don't have the clearance for a layer of paint I thought I'd give it a go - he could be my guinea pig for the dye's effectiveness.
Turns out on the red plastic of his groin, not so much. On his orange thighs it worked pretty damned well though, just where it was most needed!

So my side project went from guinea pig to boss custom (if I say so myself) in his own right.
I initially grabbed a spare Ptero too for a Toon/Comic-ish head but in-hand I had the brainwave that I could make that and a toy-ish head by swapping arm/ears between the two of 'em!
    So why not BOTH!

Meet Peacemaker and....errrrr.....Makepeace? Maybe he sounds like Michael Brandon?
No, wait, he was Dempsey! Makepeace was Glynis Barber?!
I guess that means Pointblank has both a masculine and a feminine noggin like Gigatron/Tak Overlord!

    With Toy head (Peacemaker)...

    AND 'Toon head (Makepeace)...

Who the sharp-eyed may have spotted has some extra detail added for accuracy!

I just need a decent gun for him now!

Cue Takara announcing an official LG Pointblank in 10...9...8...7...6...5...

Cheers! I think of it as simple but effective, thanks to the detailing that's already there!

I should add as a PSA for anyone else who may wish to try it, if you want to fully paint the forearms as I have you'll need to sand/shave down the semi-circular sections either side of the elbow cut otherwise, boy, will they rub!
The most nerve-wracking part was slicing off the arm pipes, you may want to try masking the surface for the cut to avoid any unwanted scuffing/scratching, mine's got a touch of, er, "Battle Damage" now from the pipectomy but luckily nothing too awful, just nicks and dings - which you're bound to get in 4 million years of war, eh?

hah i was totally going to do this. when i first bought hot rod i removed the front piece like you did and angels started to sing. i was like holy shii this could totally pass for a lazy mans repaint and thus my spare body was going to be used for just this exact thing since i was going to use the head for guyhawk. I also think that with a little bit of trimming the plastic around the wheels at the wheel wells so they are not covered you could pass this off as a sureshot as well. TRICKERY!

    GJ though looks good.

    Cheers, Bud! :thumb

Got a bit of a dilemma now, having failed to find a way I'm comfortable with whacking a visor on Toon/Comic-ish head, I'm now wondering if I should paint the peak above his eyes silver like a semi-retracted version of it?

I think that would be your best option if you don't want to get super fiddly with visors

I may try dyeing plastic myself in future, it's come out a treat.

Yup, lazy solution for the Win, I think! Makes him a little less Ptero, and it's not the first time a TF with a visor in the comic turns out to have eyes on the toy or vice versa!

There were a couple of patches where in the right light you could juuuust see a hint of orange at the thigh top within the central detail groove boundary but only in person really. I've taken a Sharpie to it now but all pics are before the treatment!

I should have just dyed Scourge entirely beige so the custom Fulcrum wouldn't be such a ballache to paint...AND bloody Spinister's wings/cockpit/backpack. Argh.

I dunno shifting that blue to another hue like beige might be more of a bugger, on the evidence of Rodders groin dense/intense colours are harder to shift after 3 immersions (2 the correct way, 1 very wrong) it went, er, a bit burgundy red, and, according to my research, you have to go darker than the current colour so you could end up with a dark brown? Beige might've been too light, unless you're talking the pale blue parts?
