Every once and a while, if you find an old family member's 30-40+ year old archives of National Geographic, you find beautiful paintings like these.

...and, even if they are for commercials, some of them are downright amazing. I remember seeing a bunch for vintage flying - like "Fly the Pan Am Clipper!" and etc. - that are just breathtaking.

The space art is fantastic. It really reflects the awed fascination that the public of the time had with the subject.

And I just noticed how elements 105 and 106 in the Union Carbide pic are, of course, blank. Freaking awesome.

KA made a post a while ago about the artistic and social value of commercial art, and some of these--especially the space stuff, like Streck already pointed out--are perfect examples of that. Yeah, they were for a paycheck, but they really say something about the world at the time.

They look like hotdogs to me.

Hasn't everyone tried hotdogs and spaghetti?

I love looking at this old art. Funny to see the ads of yesteryear.

The "ginger kid", as it was so wonderfully stated, freaks my shit out. That spaghetti looks like overcooked worms, and they are trying to escape from his mouth to the fruit bowl, look at his fork. Maybe they blowing away because of his excited mindless bellering? How does he even chew with those freako teeth?

And who puts on their Sunday finest to eat shitty Chef Boyardee?

OMG demon kids love beans! The nasty little drip of bean liquid makes that one.

Maybe ginger kid has been locked in the closet for a few days with no food, and when they finally let him out for dinner, he couldn't help but launch his fork at his face doing mach 2?

He does have that desperate "Thanks for letting me out of the closet!" look in his eyes.

I think he got that hat off a hobo he slaughtered.

I picture this kid ramming the spoon into his mouth until his teeth shatter.

These kids-n-beans pics are really creeping me out. Time to change it up.

I thought this one was pretty cool, because this kid is about to shoot both of his eyes out at once!

Oh, man. This is the funniest thread in a looooooong time. Don't forget that GingerOne had freshly sliced bananas in the centerpiece. We all know those stay fresh for a while.
