Okay, so I just recently purchased a G1 figure and got it to find out that it's in foreign packaging. I knew already that it was bilingual packaging, but I assumed that one of the languages was english.

Keep in mind that if this figure (not an expensive one at that) were in american packaging, I'd be all for keeping it sealed for nostalgia's sake. However, I'm feeling that since the packaging is the same but not the language, it doesn't have the same allure than it would if it were otherwise. Should I open it and display it in its fresh minty G1 goodness, or keep the 20 year old toy preserved as it was on the shelf 20 years ago?

Always open your toys. Doesn't matter if it's a brand new Animated Blurr or a MISB pre-rubsign G1 Megatron - open that sucker up and play with it.

If you don't get the feeling you wanted from the package, open it and enjoy its minty-fresh goodness.

do what you wish to do.

I think all the people who promote opening or keeping MISB is only doing so because they try to justify their own choice.

There is no wrong way :D

If you don't like the package to begin with, why not? :)  Though the oldest MISB I opened was about 10+ years old, and even with that I was worried about damaging the figure as some joints made loud crack noise.

What's the toy? I'd open it if it's a cool toy. But if it's just something like a Jumpstarter I'd leave it where it is... Or throw it out.

Actually, it's a Micromaster Patrol. Easterling Capt. is probably right, I could easily go for a loose set. I mean, even though it's foreign packaging, they're still a sealed G1 vintage item. There is the temptation, but my love of G1 is getting in the way of desecrating their pristine nature...

I am suffering with the same type of dilemmas right now! I'm running out of space! My collection is about 50% loose and 50% MISB. I'm not sure which way I should go with this!

I actually prefer the foreign packaging. Seems more exotic.

as for "to open or not to open?"

My opinion is that these things were made to be played with, not kept in a box for 20 years. But you're gonna have to do what you want to do and feel comfortable with.

I think this question is a lot simpler than a lot of people think.

If you buy the toys for their value as collectables, and that collectable quality, as well as tha hypothetical resale value (Whether you ever plan to sell them or not), or for that feeling of being in a toy store... keep it in the box.

If you buy it because you want the TOY, because you like the figure, and actually play with them, pose them and like having the FIGURES displayed... take it out of the box.

You've already said the foreign packaging ruins the nostalgia G1 feel for you as far as the package goes... so I'd open that sucker. Doesn't sound like it does anything for you MISB.
