Hi, I'm new, be gentle. I'm 31, and I collected and love Transformers like forever, but in all honesty I never thought about posting in forums, until the movie. It raised so much energry and emotions, good and bad, it gave me inspiration to join in the internet and post, to share it all.

I just love meeting and making new friends, so I hope I can be forgiven for not joining a website sooner. ( But to be fair I did join Seibertron.com, but I didn't even really post there until the movie) :)

    Hello,

Just joined, mainly because of this topic and the last couple of pages (5-7)

I watched TF G1 as a kid, perhaps I was 2 young to fully appreciate it when I watched it the first time round (23 now). But since the announcement of the film (1 year ago) it has rekindled the passion and has led to me reading; this board, buying the orginal movie on dvd, and even going as far as to start spending my cash on some toys (THS-02 hybrid convoy optimus prime)

    My 2 pence so far:

Optimus: the design has grown on me, not sure about it at first, robot mode is awesome I think, but truck mode I think should resemble G1 (although there was a black semi truck toy?) great decision I think to get cullun to voice. Although I admit have never watched the newer series in any detail (as it has not to my knowledge been on regular tv; bbc etc.) the G1 voices will be the one I will always associate with the character, well Ops, Megs, and starscream anyway.

Megatron: not sure on either form to be honest. I always thought the G1 gun was a bit out in the tv series and have always thought he should have been some kind of tank, but the g1 robot for is all good

Now to the reason I have actually decided to post:

    The treatment of optimus_prime_rules_007

Now I think he (or she) brought up some very valid points – the term nOOb (or NEWB as was previously written) I also find this term actually offensive, not for what it signifies but for HOW it is used. Now people will argue it is part of the internet – which it has unfortunately it has become. And is almost ALWAYS used to insult, either in games (commenting on peoples skill) or used in an argument to debase someone viewpoint. The only time i feel the term nOOb should be used is by the person themself as an act of acknowledgement that he is infact inexperienced in the subject matter - he/she does not need this pointing out to them they will know it for themselves

Myself and many of my collegues at work, who are regular posters on forums (although this is my first post on any forum) also find this term highly offensive.
Also on this board (and many others) “vets” (not all of you) assume that because you post regularly you are a self proclaimed authority on the subject – just look at “superherohype” spider-man3 forum in particular “the official venom threat”.

Just because someone has just signed up/posted for the first time does NOT mean they have not been following the arguments along the way. They perhaps have made their own opinions on the subject but a particular topic has impassioned them enough to make a comment no matter how basic should NEVER be treated with disrespect now matter if it has already been discussed before or how much you disagree with it.

Secondly I feel that although optimus_prime_rules_007 was getting a bit carried away in the language of his post, most of them were quite valid in this topic, and the kicking of him by the mod was actually quite hypocritical of the nature of this topic.

Anyhow I might join in some more discussion in other topics, if not ill see u in the q for the film!

Although after writing this, I realise that this topic is now quite old, but is the first time I have read it (as I had assumed it was some insider knowledge for the vets adim stuff) but I feel I wanted to say something after reading it.

I don’t see this use of the term “noob” to be some out of control epidemic. The regulars here have become quite close knit here over the years and that’s not saying new comers can’t fit in, they do all the time but when you come in all trying to pay down the law you’re going to draw flack. As I tried to express a couple pages ago just go with the flow and find your footing you’ll be just fine here.

I'm new here also, over 30 and still fights over my TF collection with my kids…, and yes, discovered my "Transfan nature" since the live-action movie hype stared.

Really don't care if you call me n00b or NEWb or newbie or whatever, I think this site is great and you guys rock!:rock
in my opinion I think that every newcomer should be welcomed, even if it's because of the movie hype (as ILoveDinobot mentioned, the same thing happened on SW forums as soon as the new prequel came out), I don't see anything negative about expanding the members community and the popularity of these boards (while giving outmost respect to the veterans), I mean, this is what it's all about, isn't it?! :inquisiti

Freedom is the right of all sentient newbies, no?:thumb

was not coming in to "law down the law" as you kindly point out. but rather I was mearly stating that (allthough not nessecerially on this board) but on many boards the term "nOOb" is used often as i mentioned my previous post, and also after reading "optimus_prime_rulz_007" comments i thought it was harsh for him to be kicked from this topic.

i was just stating my view on what i had read and entering into a debate which was on, and is the point of these boards. I not trying to draw flak as you point out, only interested on what people could perhaps term as "netiquette".

i was also pointing out that although i havn't posted that perhaps there are other whom, like me have been reading and are awear of the topics currently in use. albeit i have just posted on an old thread. so i would like to think that I have not just "come in" but rather been around and kept in the shadows as it were.

however on a more positive note - this is perhaps the best board i have come across becuase on the wide ranging discussions and pics on it - loved the thread with all the pics collected so far - thts awesome! and also a lot of credit to those whom find pics - how do you do it?! anyhow keep up the good work!

anyhow buzzbeak - what are your views on the THS-02 hybrid convoy?, i love the model and is somewhat more afordable than the MP Optimus (with/ w/o trailer) which I keep noticing that is considerably cheeper in toys r us than in specialist collectors store (forbidden planet etc), internet sellers or argos (as was previously pinned up on a different thread)

I may not have been as clear as I could have been. My comments where not all meant to be directed at you personally but general statements about some new comers from the recent past.

I wasn’t directly involved with the optimus_prime_rulz_007 issue’s you have brought up but I can assure you actions taken by the mods that where was not with out reason.

I though it looked cool enough but I can’t buy everything and took a pass on it.

I joined this forum last week because I keep looking for news and pictures of the upcoming film + toys to accompany it. This site was the only one I found that was useful, so i thought I'd sign on up. Long time fan, but like many others, I didn't realize how much I love TF until I heard the movie was coming out.

This post right here is a perfect example of my point in my first post in this thread. Alot of people who like Transformers simply don't post on message boards for reasons like this, and there are a large portion of these people who are fans because of the originals. I see it over and over again. Alot of new people come in here all gung ho for the original Transformers and post what they don't like about the new movie or what is disapointing about the new shows as their first discussions in the community. Then I see fans from this website who have become buddy buddies and 'been there done that' type of fans who jump all down their throats. And because of it they don't ever come back. And their friends refuse to even join the community.

Posters like the one in this quoted post represent a HUGE portion of the transformers fan base overall.

As a side note I also think it's no coincidence that as soon as Hasbro goes back to revisit the classic characters in their toys with the Classics line, as well as striking homages within namesakes on their main lines like Cybertron, that they recorded the Transformers franchise biggest profets in the history of Hasbro for one full year. And everytime I go to the store, I see the Classics line pretty much all sold out while there are still some remnents of Cybertron and the Alternators left as shelf warmers.

Anyway, I just think the intimidation I see on this site really takes away from the fan community and does more damage than good. I've even seen some well known and liked members resort to irritable pettiness that just makes me lose all the respect I once had for them. It's things like that. We should all recognize we are fans for a reason, and we come here for various reasons. But the common reason is that we want to communicate with each other as well as "big brother" (Hasbro) who may possibly be watching. And freedom of speech should be a right that is practiced on message boards as large and important as this one. I remember I once had a differing opinion about an alternator with some regulars here several years back. I think it was about Tracks or Meister. I didn't like it because the color in the leaked image was too different from the namesake. The moderator resorted to threats of intimidation and went on power trips because of my differing opinion from his. He went on a complete power trip and even told me in reply to the freedom of speech comment I maid, (and I quote) "there is no freedom of speech on the internet." Other members came to my defense and agreed it was very unprofessional for a moderator to be attacking me like he did just because I had a different opinion.

I don't believe that person is a moderator any more as that was several years back and i haven't seen him on the boards. But it's people like that who are steeling from our fandom. Stealing because every time you try and silence what someone has to say, big brother may not be getting an accurate view of their consumer should they be watching, and they may also scare away some brilliant minds who could contribute to our community.

To back up that point, I with several others continued to voice our concerns about the red and yellow paint choices for Meister and Tracks despite the regulars here trying to bash us and telling us to just shut up and accept it and using supposed derogetory terms like "fanboy" toward us. But we continued to deal with that and debated our position with plausible points and let our opinions be known of what we as consumers wanted. And wouldn't you know? Hasbro heard us and changed the colors of those 2 alternators to match the likeness of their original namesakes.

    Every voice matters.

Some very good points here, it's really funny how simply because someone's opinion differs from that of others, especially mods, they like to over-exaggurate their sense of power and simply ban people from topics.

Maybe you should have asked this guy how he felt. People don't just post a certain way without a reason. It might have helped to ask.

People get banned for braking rules or insulting other members. If we banned people for having different options on the movie the mods would have banned each other. You see what I’m suggesting is the mods don’t act with one hive mind and we have different opinions on a wide variety of topics.

It should be noted that there are more than a few unwritten rules about decorum and interaction on the boards that are enforced without being directly posted IN the rules forum; the locking of zombie threads being a big one.

There has been an awful lot of newfolk bellyaching recently about what would appear to be moderator actions based on personal bias, if you were a relative newbie, but are actually moderator actions based on some of the generally accepted rules of decorum on the boards. It might be worth it to smooth some more of those out and put them in the rest of the official rules.

This honestly isn't meant to be inflammatory or an attempt to start anything, just an idea.

It still would not work; simply put, few (if any) people read the rules. At most, they browse through it and that is as good as not reading them.

It's amazing how patient the mods for this forum are; members sassing the mods for editing out flame baits in every big thread, and those ignoring blatant hints to stop (some even doing it multiple times, like they're trying to start an arguement with the mod for some bizarro reason).

Seriously, props to all the mods: you guys are doing great work.
