Thundertron, did the writers of exiles miss an opportunity?

Just to make things clear I have not read Exiles yet but from what I gather there is a lot of build up as to the identity of the captain. Only to discover he is a brand new character no-one ever heard of.

It seems a missed opportunity to introduce a badass from the past as the leader of this force.

Personally I think Overlord, Dezaras, Magmatron or even Galvatron would have been great and better choices than this unknown character.

Who would you have liked to have seen in this role instead?

I agree completely. Personally I was hoping for Overlord, but really any existing character would've worked. Such a confusing move. I think we're getting a Thundertron figure at some point though.

It did seem a little... odd, but I didn't really dislike it.

Black Shadow would've been a good option given he's a space gangster. Easily adjustable to being a space pirate :)

my thought was that he was thunderwing but they couldn't get rights to the name? so they called him thundertron instead.

Yeah, he definitely wasn't meant to be Thunderwing.

Also, considering Thundertron's getting a PRID Voyager toy, I really wouldn't be surprised if he showed up in the cartoon itself as well.

I've yet to read the book. If he's actually a new and interesting character, I welcome him. All the same, I wonder if it'd been a better time to revive a legacy character.

Really depends on if he's not an obivious carbon copy of an archetype already filled.

It's not really a missed opportunity - a new character is welcome and Thundertron's origin as a character from the era of colonisation who hates all Cybertronians for being abandoned has a lot of potential. The problem is just in the book's execution of his intro - all the Star Seekers are new versions of old characters, and the book goes out of its way to NOT mention the captain's name, indicating they're ramping up to a reveal, only for him to turn out to be a new character. It doesn't work very well, because they build it up to mean something and then it doesn't. But if the character gets some facetime in other media, I think he'll redeem himself pretty quickly.

*Wonders if this thread would have been a complaint about just pulling out old characters if that had happened instead*

He appears to be his own character, so he's not a wasted opportunity in that respect.

The build up towards his name reveal was very unnecessary however given that he is a new character

Deviation from one's personal preference can be disappointing, but it's not really a missed opportunity in general. If you got it your way, there would be others who saw a missed opportunity to introduce a new character instead of rehashing yet another old one. There would be yet more who saw a missed opportunity for it to be some other rehashed character instead of the one they chose.

'Sides, we should already know from the Prime forum exactly how productive it is to speculate on "missed opportunities". Better to discuss what we got!

Sorry, not necessarily saying that I would have preferred a returning character to a new one but they way in which it was handled in the book makes me wonder if it was intended to be a returning character rather than build up to hearing a name never used before.

I love when new characters are introduced and make a big impact (Bulkhead, Lugnut and Lockdown being great examples) but to build up a new character in a manner as exlies does just creates a massive anti-climax.

That seems like an awfully strong reaction for something you admit you haven't read.

Even if that's so, it's not a missed opportunity so much as an odd narrative choice. Probably they wanted to create mystery around him and make him a big deal from the get-go.
