I've never used it, but the FTC endorses it.

I wonder if they can get rid of all those stupid refinance offers I receive as well.

I filled out the opt out prescreen form online. It actually worked for a few months but now we're back to getting 2 or 3 offers of credit cards or refinancing a day. I don't really know what to do about it. I think it might be optional for them, unlike the Do Not Call registry.

Yeah I opted out too. It will reduce the amount of offers you get but doesn't eliminate them completely. Instead of getting weekly offers from certain banks (I'm not naming names CAPTIAL ONE) I seem to get a few a year from them now.

What you do is take their prepaid envelopes, fill it with your other junk mail, and mail it back to them. It costs them nothing if you throw away the envelope, but if you mail them back their own crap, then they'll get the hint and stop sending you stuff.

I don't know if this works, but sending it back with another company's credit card offer might be fun.

I can't believe I didn't think to run to the internet before finally opting out over the phone. I wasn't thrilled about transmitting all my identification info including SSN, over unsecure channels. This site looks much safer actually.

Heh. I was just coming here to post about doing exactly this pretty regularly a few years ago. It amused me a bit for a while, but it never seemed to have an impact. I considered furthering the process to include mailing smelly things back to them, but never went for it.

I probably get a friggin' Capital One offer 3-5 days out of each week. Some days, my wife and I each get one.

I do it fairly regularly with my offers and I have been noticing a decrease in junk mail lately. Its better than shredding it all.
